I have been in the process of getting a bus over the last weeks. I borrowed an auto trailer from a friend and headed up to New London, CT today for the pickup. Round trip door to door it was a 7 hour ride. I had BusBBQ as my co-pilot and we made great time, no traffic either way. Got the trailer loaded up and my Tribute worked like a champ.

Tribute handled the load well and the ride home was smooth. Home Sweet Home!


Got lots of stuff to sort out and a good housecleaning. Will get some pics in the daylight. Bus is solid but it has some issues to sort out so I will again be relying on the brains of the DVG to get this road ready. Much thanks to Bill for making the trip and going the extra mile! It was a good day!

Yes I got the rear bumper and the grill for the front vent.

A few extra pieces for the interior. Deck floor is solid


Front doors hinges fit tight. No sagging


Driver floor


Peek on the underside. No oil leaking.


Wood headliner is hanging. Inside needs to be set up and the seats recovered.


Engine compartment, external oil filter is going to be relocated and it needs a good going over!

It will be a slow process peeling back the layers but took some looks at the engine compartment. Bus was born RED so thats a good sign!!

Got the battery charged but there is some clicking going on when the pos terminal goes to the post. Lots of other connections are drawing off this so the great minds of the DVG were sorting it out at last nights meeting.

Lots of rusty connections and a few too many!


Some type of start relay (?) has attached in the upper right off the canister.


Needs a good going over with new wires and connectors,hose clamps and filters.


Would not be a VW project without one of the cats being curious!

Looks like a GREAT bus to work with, enjoy it! Can't wait to see the interior come along.

spent a few hours taking inventory on some of the issues. I checked the connections on the starter and solenoid and there are some additional connections piggy backed on. There were also two extra wires on the positive side of the battery. I took off the ones that looked like part of a relay and i got the engine to crank, but it didn't turn over. I got the engine to spin last night so it moves! Yeah. Also have uncovered that the bus was originally red as you can see from the engine compartment. As my daughter said it's a white wagon with a red heart!!

The gas tank does not even register R, but not sure if that accurate. The tank has been sitting for quite a while so I replaced all the fuel lines and filter from the hard line up to the carb. the old filter was black and most of the fuel connections were minus clamps, so that's all been fixed. The wire to the coil was melted in spots and frayed so that got removed and cleaned up with the new yellow connector.



Gas that came out of fuel pump and carb when lines got changed.


Fuel filter that is gone. Will put in a metal filter when the tank is cleaned.


the bus has been out in the elements for a while and the moss has been growing. Gave it a good wash today to see what was hiding. Did come across a spot behind the PS slider that has a rust through in the outer shell. I'll have to put up white duct tape! Notice the red paint flecks




Had fun exploring the mysteries of the bus that I hope will get solved!

nothing like being new owner...The rust area's are not hard to fix.....as long as there is something solid to weld to...

When you tried to start it were you drawing gas from a can and not the "varnish" that appears to be in the tank?

After checking out some things yesterday, it was obvious that the bus need a tune-up so got the needed parts and Bill gave up his day to help me out.

The is the old rotor, with electric tap and frayed wires. Put in new plugs, wires, rotor and condenser.




We got the bus to turn over many times but it bogged out so Bill pulled out the carb and we did a fast cleaning and ran the fuel line back to fresh gas. It started right up each time but then couldn't hold the idle. the manifold boots are nasty so going to replace them and see if that helps. was just glad to hear the engine running. Hope a few more tweaks will get it going steady!! Thanks Bill for all the work you put in today!
