Re: 63 rag
been putting some good miles on the old girl over this summer. Shes been the daily driver when its not 90+ degrees out. No issues... until late last week. At speed on highway, the engine cuts outs for a second and then comes back. No issues at low RPM, only highway. Sounds like a dying fuel pump, but I havent had one ever slowly dye. In my experience, they either work...or dont. Any feedback?

Re: 63 rag
Could be ignition... check the wire from the points. Maybe it's chafed and grounds cutting the ignition.
Fuel pumps usually just fail. Does the oil smell like gas?

I'll check during lunch. It has recent plugs and wires ( from this winter) but maybe something happened to them over that past few months.

Re: 63 rag
As mentioned at the show, the problem persists.
I changed the wires, cap and rotor. Drained the fuel filter to confirm good flow. Even tightened the connections on the coil and at the dist. Still had an issue and had to limp home twice. Boo!
I noticed the bowl in the carb was dry one night bc the squirter wasn't squirting, so I took the top off to clean the input valve. That got me to the show...almost.... but the issue is ongoing. Sounds like the carb accel pump needs some loving. This is a 28-1 bosol on it now, and given my time constraints with the family and house/ garage construction, Im just going to order a rebuilt, rebushed german solex and call it a day.
Hope to have her out again soon, bc this is VW weather!

funny.
That post was saved in my 'drafts' during the issue that led to ' The Great Purge of 13'.
I just rec'd this last night from them. Id rather run real OG stuff on my cars, so I bought one redone and rebushed outright. It was too late to start the motor last night, after the install, so I will tinker tonight

Re: 63 rag
Finally got the carb on and running right. It was having issue when first installed and the builder and I talked a few times discussing the situation. After exhausting all options, I simply yanked the tank and disconnected the fuel before the pump. I blast of air at 100psi quickly remedied the situation and shot out whatever debris that was restricting the flow of fuel to the back of the car. Made it work no problems today, and looking fwd to some miles on it now that the weather is not sweltering.

Re: 63 rag
I seem to remember you having the same problem on the Thing going to a show, what are you buying your gas at Walmart ?

I'm not an air cooled snob , I like them all !

Re: 63 rag
The gas isnt the issue, Its generally bc I dont buy drivers. My purchases are usually projects or cars that havent been on the road in years and I drive them as I 'restore' ( and im using that term very loosely). As the need arises, I coat the gas tanks of my cars with the por 15 restoration process. I did that with the 73 thing as she acted up on the 440 on the way to NJ. But as I had the tank out for the thing, and the coating flowing, I did the ghia, 65 and the baja all in one shot. Never an issue on any of them after that.Tom wrote:I seem to remember you having the same problem on the Thing going to a show, what are you buying your gas at Walmart ?
Usually the tell tale sign is a dirty fuel filter, but on the 63, it was clean as a whistle.....that's the rub. Hoping its sorted out now.

'Father... its been a over a year since may post on the 63.....'
Wow. Time flies when your having fun. The 63 has been pretty trouble free for the last year. Was my driver for the bulk of the summer, other then when it was too hot out.
Towards the end of summer, she had a soft brake pedal. Was a single slave anyway so I wanted to upgrade considering it was a driver. A few months ago, I yanked the master and upgraded to the 68+ style. Used a 67 only reservoir and tried my first time bench bleeding. Car wasn stands in the garage while I worked on the 100 other projects I had/ have going. Turns out the ' new ' one was defective and pissed fluid everywhere. Swapped to a new new one, and was ready to rock. Just need the time to do it. Yesterday.... I got the nod. Was in the garage at 530 am - 430 pm. Finally bleed the brakes on the new master.
Front was pulling to one side so I check my front pads. Wasn't pretty.

old vs new

After it was all cleaned up

NOS lock washer.

Back on all fours

Drove her into work this am.... Its good to have her back in rotation.

Wow... if someone had shown me a pic of this car I'd have said "I know I've seen it before, somewhere. I think all that paint was chipped off by hand" but not remembered where I saw it.
Glad to see it back on the road again.

Re: 63 rag
Last post on this car Dec 14. Yikes. Shes been good to me since, but gave me a soft pedal at the beginning of this summer. Wasnt sure if it was a bad master or something else, but havent gotten a chance to check it out. Last night I yanked the rear rims to adjust the brakes and check it out. Res had fluid and still only had a pedal if I pumped a few times.
Adjusted the rear brakes, but they werent really out of adjustment. Bled the RR side, and surprisingly, it had some air in the line. Did the same to the LR, no air. Pumped the brakes and had a nice pedal again. Thank god, but I wasnt in the mood to do a master in this.
I'll do the same for the front tonite, dump the oil, and give it an overall once over. Looking fwd to getting back behind the wheel on this one.

Re: 63 rag
thanks... but was short lived.... Brakes were nice a firm on the way to work and then during lunch while running errands. But on the way home, the pedal got low again and I had to pump them to get pressure. I'll need to try bleeding again to see if there is still air in there. If so, it must be taking in air somewhere so I'll have to continue to dig.

Re: 63 rag

The poor old girl has been laid up since August..... She went to the side of the garage and sat all winter.
Dug into the this air in the line issue the past few nights. Noticed more floor pan near the pedal was wet so led me to believe the master went bad. Swapped that out, and proceeded to bleed the brakes via the power bleeder. For some reason... same issue.... was not getting a firm ' pedal'. Bleed all four again and pumped it up again. Then I noticed a puddle in the rear, and the brake fluid all over. Turns out that one of the rear hardline was rubbing on the shock, but only when the car was on the ground. With it in the air, ( wheels hanging) there was sooooo much room, I never noticed. Crap! Swapped the brake line, rebled..... she is at work today. Still not the pedal I like, but my air compressor is on the fritz with my new one in assembly mode.
Making a list of a few other things it needs, like muffler and a clutch.
