Ive started threads here before, it was suggested I create one to follow my car. I just wanted to share my latest acquisition, a all metal roof rack! I love it, got it from craigslist 100$ one bar is a little bent but bracket are there and it went right on. It's silver/grey maybe it was galvanized? Any thoughts on cleaning it up. I'm thinking just clean it up and spray paint it grey. I still can't figure out how to post pics. It should be iPhone easy! Was thinking of getting one of those empi 190$ wood slat racks but this looks like it's built well. Guy said it came off his 70 in 1979, and he's held on to it since!

Re: 83 mexibug
Rob, was this the rack on Craigslist from Baldwin?
The late rack isn't meant to have wood slats, if you want one with slats flip the rack you have and buy one that was designed to carry the slats. Racks bring a good dollar when they're in good shape.
There are repop knockdown kits that you assemble. Ed bought one for Otto his 74 1302.
Else, look to strip and powder coat yours, or give it a fresh rattle can

Yup from Baldwin http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/pts/4488897035.html excuse my inability to properly insert stuff, hence the lack o pics! Yeah totally understand the wood vs metal. Haven't looked into it but guessing powder coating would b pricey. Prob rattle can it. You've seen my car. I'm not looking for perfection just nice. I have to get to a meeting or learn to post pics!

Re: 83 mexibug
Rob I redid my wood slotted rack just about 2 years ago restained and polyed the wood. Changed all the hardware to new stainless steel. And had it powder coated. For what it cost I could have bought a new stainless rack cheaper. If you were to powder coat it the cost would be around $225.00. You can probably do a nice job rattle can job for under $35.00. Ed

Re: 83 mexibug
So the vac can on my newish pertronix dist died and I had a annoying flat spot. Thanks amazon cause they sent me a label to send it back for a refund. So tonight I put the original points distributer back on, also with bad vac can. I learned two things. Don't hook the wire from points to positive side of coil!! Smokey! So I switched slightly melted wire and it fired right up. Timed it to 7.5 I think..the only notch on my pulley with timing light and it runs and drives fantastically. I know the vac advance is not working but I have zero flat spot. I picked up new points and condenser but unless it gives me trouble I'm not touching a thing. Just going to drive it,and enjoy it. Thought I'd share. But essentially it's a 009? Runs great. Whatever

Re: 83 mexibug
The distribution is made in China just like all the other ones, so it's no surprise that the vacuum can failed.rob711 wrote:So the vac can on my newish Pertronix dist died
Look for a real Bosch 034... I just bought one in good working order for $60.

Re: 83 mexibug
Didn't I warm you about the Pertronix?!
They're JUNK.
Had one in the bus. It died so it was replaced with another. Which also died. Back to points and condensor.

Re: 83 mexibug
Yes, fully warned!! Thanks. It's a shame not to many good aftermarket parts available, I like the idea of electronic ignition/ no points but I guess that's not a option. I picked up a new set of points and condenser but from my FLAPS I'm not changing them until they give me reason! Zero flat spot!!! The vacuum advance is not working!

Re: 83 mexibug
So I put my new to me German, dist on my Mexican bug, with it's chinese 34pict3 carb. Gapped dist to .016 started it, timed it with gun 7.5/ notch on pulley, sounding good. Hook up dwell meter and get 30. So after fucking around I'm now gapped at .012 and dwell is 52. Seems to run good, haven't been able to really drive it too much yet. This all sound kosher?

Re: 83 mexibug
.016" is a starting point. I find a dwell of 49* is about .014"
You want it 49*.
It's a PITA to do in the car, but its easy with my Sun machine. If you want to bring it over I can get it dead on at 49*.
Also, whenever you change the dwell you have to recheck the timing.

Re: 83 mexibug
Thanks, I'll see where .014 gets me, appreciate offer. After screwing around with it, the contact surfaces of points almost look burntish?! Do u think if I keep it as is and just drive it will cause any adverse reactions? That was my plan.
Re: 83 mexibug
Old GM distributors used to have a metal hatch you would slide up so you could insert a hex screwdriver on a spring so you could adjust the dwell while the car is running. It was a great innovation, I'm surprised no one made an aftermarket version for other car brands, must be a copyright thing.

Re: 83 mexibug
You'd have to totally redesign the distributor. And no one was going to do that for the Oo9.Tom wrote:Old GM distributors used to have a metal hatch you would slide up so you could insert a hex screwdriver on a spring so you could adjust the dwell while the car is running. Re: 83 mexibug
Rechecked it dwell 49 timing 7.5 and dropped idle to 950. 10 mile test ride seems good twice I got slight pop through exhaust idling in 2nd going down hill, another time slowing/engine breaking.
Sitting at light, thinking I did time it with vac still hooked up, car dies. No lights just dead. Quick push to side of road, eventually discover super hot voltage regulator, it's under back seat, two small gauge wires melted together, not sure if they got hot or were touching regulator and melted together. Have to start looking at diagrams and figure out what po's have done. Every wire in that spot seems to be cut and spliced. Should regulator get that hot? I was able to seperate wires and get it home. Wtf!

I wasn't specifically saying VW , I was thinking of all brands that didn't copy the design.

Re: 83 mexibug
Sure that's fucking great. It would b nice if someone made a reliable electronic system to turn on and off at a specific rpm to tell the distributor when to fire but apparently that cannot b figured out either! I've learned there r points in my voltage regulator. Another simple god damn on off on off circuit that wears out. I'm going to order solid state regulator and brushes for generator from air-cooled.net.
Re: 83 mexibug
Stay on it Rob. You'll get it all sorted.

Hey... my 01 Civic doesn't have a distributor.
I get it. And this is why I got this car, to be expected. After i thought my distributor problems were resolved, to then have voltage regulator issues that left the car dead it was a true "what the hell" moment. I'm not certain vr is bad. I drove it to work today with no issues, I have the seat out to keep a eye on things, it gets warm but that's normal from what I understand. It's odd how the brake light and other wire, both black, I'm color blind, both same gauge melted together though. All the lights work, so I dont think they are shorting out. Seems like a bad idea to just keep driving it how it is, running great, no tell tale signs, like super bright lights to tell me it's vr. Hmmmm

Gotta love it when the gremlins let the smoke out of the wires. I'm sure you'll get it sorted and right before too long, just keep at it. Persistence and motivation are the keys.
