PCV/Breather oil leak

Post by Markus »

I'm investigating a bad leak. oil light even came on when i let it get about 2 quarts low. pulled over immediately and filled. Oil all over the engine compartment, even up on the heater blower fan. pooling up on the top engine tins, soaking engine seal and dripping underneath and even dripping off the right side bumper after getting off the highway. So hard to tell the source of course but it seems to be coming from the little black box next to the dizzy. Is this called an oil breather or a pcv valve? it has a cork gasket and a tube which i replaced that connects to the S hose off the air box.

some info

didnt leak a drop riding around town, a few miles on the bqe here and there for 2 months. Once i took to the highway for 100 miles it started leaking bad. I was doing between 55 and 65.

The cork gasket under the breather box got distorted/stretched out.

its dripping mostly on the right side underneath but i'm almost certain this is all originating from the top of the engine. its not coming from the oil pressure switch.

The fan looks pretty clean. I recently replaced those seals and o ring

Some questions

is it possible to lose that much oil from the breather? unless im really confused about how to check oil, I always keep it between the lines.

How do i check to see if the breather box is working properly?

I read stuff about worn rings causing blowby. I'm dont completely understand why and my compression was ok last time i checked less than 500 miles ago.

alternatively it could be coming from somewhere else entirely and its just not obvious to me. My reasoning is that oil can get spread around but it wont necessarliy get spread upwards which is why i'm focusing on the top of the engine.

thats it for now. would appreciate any help.

I would suggest you clean the engine as best you can with gunk and get it started to see where it's leaking, any suggestions here are just a guess and we pretty much covered that. When you pulled the breather box to replace the gasket was it full of oil ?
I'm not an air cooled snob , I like them all !

well i wouldnt say it was full, it has oil and crud in it but if it ever was full it would have drained out. I will be cleaning today.
