Well... it didn't make it under it's own power.

Audrey called me saying the engine was running rough and the generator light came on. Since she was very close to home I told her to turn around. I grabbed the tow bar and it was just easier to tow it to GT Imports. After I unhooked it I turned the key and it started right up. I drove it two blocks and it ran OK. Tony and Wayne took a look and replaced the points and condenser, never replaced, adjusted the carb and set the timing. It ran 100 times better. Most likely it's crap in the carb from the hardline. I originally figured to change the fuel filter after a few tankfuls, but guess it needed it sooner.

Tony's gonna give it a complete once over and get it inspected. Other things are change the gear lube, adjust the brake pedal freeplay and tighten the clutch cable.

Soon... very soon.

Well the 'wonder' made it's way to Tony's today, but not under its own power. Had it out running this morning on a 15 mile drive. Later I headed to the shop but even before I got it out onto Sunrise Hwy, the bug was bucking like a bronco. Stopped a few times to see what the fuss was about but then the alt light came on and the fuel gauge was swinging like a pendulum. Pulled over and gave GR a call to get his take on this since it has been running without any issues. Made it home with the same senario, and then GR offered to tow it to GT so that what we did.




Early diagnosis is the fuel line/filter. So I left it at the shop for Tony and Wayne to get it purring. Wayne already had it sounding mucho better with a few adjustments and a very well trained ear!! There's a few more things on the list to work out.

For amlost a year this bug has greeted me every time I pull in the driveway and it was very weird to come home and have an empty space where the bug usually sits. I miss the way it makes me smile!!

Yes they are! Wayne jumped to work on this as soon as we got there and I know they will make it right!

I see you went with the historical plates , is there a way you can have that type of insurance without that type of plate ? I've taken my car off the road for the winter (no heat) and am considering options for the spring.

I have antique insurance and regular plates...

I'm probably going to see if I can get a set of plates for the year of the car. I have to wait for the title to arrive since it was just registered before I can make the switch. Here's the link to the DMV about vintage/historical plates. Other members have regular NY plates but not sure what their coverge is. I asked for them and it was written on the insurance ID card. GR posted some other links above also. What type of coverage do you have on the bug as a DD or other? If you want me to PM you so more info let me know!

Tom, both Peabody and Reise are insured through Hagerty, while Reise still isnt registered, Peabody has the current style plate however the do say "historical" on them. When I originally registered it they were going to give me regular plates, but I requested 'historical' plates because the registration fees are significantly less expensive, although they are only good for 1 year.

Long story short, your answer is yes.

Tom, Your insurance card has to have the words "historical" writen on it. You have to make sure Your insurer knows this because they make the cards both with and without. Trust Me I won't make that mistake again. If You want to go with a vintage plate, You then have to do it by mail. Just mail in a picture of the plate,copy of the reg and a copy of the historical insurance card. The vehicle has to be currently registered with historic insurance to do the vintage plate.
Keep in mind although Your insurance company May Be OK with the extra mileage DMV states these plates are for limited use vehicles. I've had both historical and vintage plates. Driving all over at all times,out of state and parking on the steets in the city with no problems.

I guess everyone answered a part of my question, when I go for new plates in the spring i'll probably ask more questions but right now I don't want to crap on Audreys tread anymore than I have.

Not the case at all. We all shared some info that might result in a solution so it makes it a good thing. For what you might pay for histoical insurance, it might be more cost effective than surrending plates and registering again six months later!! See more food for thought!!

I didn't surrender the plates , I transferred them to the Pathfinder. In the spring I will get new plates and insure the bug again. I'm just looking for the least expensive insurance options.

Spoke with Tony and it was the rear left wheel bearing that was bad and causing all the rattle. He was replacing it today and working on some of the other items on the list. The gear synchro still needs to be addressed. Should be home this week. Yeah!

So we'll see it at the next meeting for sure?

Here's a new problem... the car is very bouncy while driving down the road. Tony asked me to take it for a ride and it's pretty noticeable. At first I thought it was the shocks, but after taking a look the rear is very low and it's sitting on the "snubbers". I guess the PO lowered it until the torsion bars are not holding the car up.

Ideas? Solutions?
