Re: '73/1500

I've been in Greenpoint since '98 but I only got the bug in 2010 which would explain why you didn't see it when you lived here. I've got a '69 Squareback too but it's relaxing on the west coast until spring.

No garage for me....both cars live on the street and we work on them there too. We got the ...

Re: '73/1500

Yeah, that was definitely me.....driving like a granny with the flashers on in the middle lane of the BQE heading home to Greenpoint from Flushing. That was some bad driving weather! I was glad I saw you though b/c I almost NEVER see another ACVW even in the fairest weather, so to see you during a ...

Re: 74 Beetle

Hey Glenn.....this is totally irrelevant to your recent clutch issues (while at GT you maybe saw our Squareback which is about to get the clutch cable guide tube welded back in place?) but I'm wondering if you have the specs/parts list of your old 1904 online somewhere. I found the ones for the 2180 ...

I'm about 7 months late with an update about my experience with Geno and the state of the engine build  I hope it's been a good (or at least good enough) 7 months for everyone.....it's gone by quickly ...

Re: '73/1500

I thought so too......especially because this was on the next block over from us and there isn't another bug around for miles. So why would someone have no bug, but a single fender....and then get rid of it, you know?

Re: '73/1500

I gave Gino a call the other day.....he was friendly, knowledgeable about VW stuff, and interested in doing some work. I'm going to bring my stuff out to him next Friday. Thanks for the tip Glenn.

On a totally unrelated note, we were coming home the other night when we saw this out in the trash. Am ...

Re: '73/1500

Makes sense to me. I got all my parts from different places (CB Performance, ACN, DPR, etc.) so there was never any one "pro" to look at everything at once.

I'd rather bring it to somebody or ship it to somebody to have a look than buy a bunch of expensive depth gauges and specialized micrometers ...

Re: '73/1500

You don't have to be that anal.

I'm trying to think of how to answer this without walking right into a lube joke but.....

Since this is my first time building an engine, I guess I'm trying to figure out just how "anal" to be about measurements and clearances, etc. without driving myself crazy.

Shoot....I don't know how it happened but I didn't get any email notifications that all those lube posts showed up. I'm 10 days late to all the fun. :(

Re: '73/1500

Thanks for the tips.

So far, I have this cam assembly paste that Matt used in his build and I was going to use it on cam/lifters.

And Glenn...I'm thinking that because my work area is indoors that maybe the better option for bearings, etc ...

Does anyone have a preferred assembly lube or at least one they'd recommend to someone building an engine in a spare room in their apartment? In other words not motor oil?

Re: '73/1500

I never used Plastigauge. if the crank and rods are "blue printed" then there should be no problem when you set them to factory torque. Also there's not much you can do to alter the clearances without taking it to a machine shop.

Well everything was supposed to be dynamically balanced but now ...

Re: '73/1500

Just for s and g's, and if you carbs will allowit, try swapping the carbs from side of the motor. The problem should follow the carb, if the issue is indeed the carb.

I'm stumped on the heat thing. Is that part of the motor hotter than the rest of the case? Can you toss in your old dizzy and try ...

Re: '73/1500

So life in the Brooklyn division of DVG has been pretty crummy since we got back from our trip. The Squareback still only runs well enough to park and now the beetle is out of commission. Here's another semi-epic account of where we're at:

On Wednesday, we were supposed to get out to Glenn to see ...

Tom...the pushrod was barely in the cup on the #2 intake and totally out of it on the exhaust.

Ok....it's hot as hell outside so we're taking a break. Here's a little update.....

Both valves on #2 were INCREDIBLY loose. These aren't stock rockers so the adjusting screw is longer but the adjusting nuts were maybe only a few turns from backing all the way off!!

I'm not quite sure how it ...

Re: '73/1500

Ill be honest, I dont think its a valve adjustment unless something material occurs with the valve train ( broken spring etc)

My money is on intake leak. Spray the base of the intakes with some starting fuel and watch for change in engine speed.

Will do. But I'll use carb cleaner. Isn't it a bit ...

Re: '73/1500

There should not be any up/down movement. Maybe one of the fiber washers broke.

Let me know when you can come by. I'll fix it and give you 4 paper gaskets.

Should only take a few minutes to fix.

Ok.

Hopefully, I can get this thing running well enough to drop by sooner than later.

Does it ...
