Check the amount of threads left on the end of the cable. I remember there being 2 larger nuts on the cable between the lever and the wing nut to "shorten" the cable and I don't think there were put on when the transmission was installed. You might have to remove the wingnut and add the nuts, or other spacer on and reinstall the wingnut.

I'm guessing it would be about 1/2 inch to make up on the cable before the wing nut?Glenn wrote:Check the amount of threads left on the end of the cable. I remember there being 2 larger nuts on the cable between the lever and the wing nut .

Re: AoT's White Wonder
Got the wing nut off after learning how to be a contortionist!! There's not a lot of room and I am a little person compared to some of you big boys!!
I put a 1/2 inch nut on the cable, gave the cable and the wing nut a shot of PB and got the wing nut back on. The pedal now runs much higher and I'll adjust as needed. I noticed that the wing nut looks like it gets seated inside the opening of the clutch lever. Now that the cable seems to buttered up would it be best to have it without the spacer nut in place?
Here's the wing nut is not sitting in the clutch lever

Work on the axle bolts last week paid off, they clean and dry

Re: AoT's White Wonder
The next BIG project is the rear suspension, in other words, it's got a saggy ass.
The rear is sitting on the "snubbers" and the ride is harsh to say the least. I think the PO attempted to lower the rear to match the lowered front.

Does the engine need to come out to adjust the spring plates (hope so) since there is a good drip heading south on the side of the cylinders and off the rear tranny mount?Glenn wrote:

Just know that when I'm driving, the marilyns when in an unsupported mode def feel the effects of the snubbers!!

Keep working at it and it gets done!!

Re: AoT's White Wonder
Took some time to see if I could get the idle adjusted since it seemed to be running uneven. Got my books and tools out yesterday and didn't get the result I was hoping for. Tried again today and used the Dave & Busters method (aka Rob and Dave VW resource). Took a few times and engine starts to get a better idle and then took it for a ride. It is running better in the lower gears and not cutting out so I'll leave it and see how it cold starts.
The clutch pedal sits alot higher than before I made the adjustment on the cable but might get back under there to give it a tweak. As GA likes to say "need to put on some confidence miles" with the new changes.

After these lovely photos, now it's time to make some chocolate dipped strawberries, get gussied up and put on those red pumps!!

Nope... ideally the engine should be in so you can see the revised ride heightAoT wrote:

Re: AoT's White Wonder
Well to "soften" the ride for the time being, I removed the snubbers tonight. Jacked the car up and they came off intact. Took it for a ride and it is better, no teeth gnashing or the marilyns experiencing a free fall!!
Bug on level ground, snubbers hitting the bump stop

Car up on jacks, snubs waiting to be popped...

Bug back on solid ground, a bit more clearance for the bumps in the road!!

Going to try and get it out for a good run this weekend.

Re: AoT's White Wonder
be careful when you bottom those out..... maybe you can ' trim ' the snubbers

I was a hoot to see it lined up with other primped bugs and now I've got to work on making it look SWEET!

Great ride. When it's done the way you want it I know it'll be SWEET. Keep up the great work and it was a pleasure to meet you at the Wonders first show.

Re: AoT's White Wonder
Finally got back to getting some work done on the wonder. The other night I put the snubbers back on the rear bump stops to save the rear end.
Put the front hood molding on to finish the look. I know '74 has a different length but Ed gave me a piece to use. Even though it was a little shorter I drilled a hold up on the hood and got it to work. Couple of dimples in the molding but it looks good in the dark.

Made the decision to change out the window scrapers, seals and felt channel. Started working on getting the vent windows stripped. The seals came off easy enough but the felt channel was like opening a can of sardines. It broke off in small pieces but I grabbed one of the metal strips and rolled it down and got it out of the track. There is some very dry rubber and the glue that was used to hold it in place is long gone.

Any product around that would clean out the track to accept the new stuff?

Re: AoT's White Wonder
i dont think it needs to be perfectly clean so dont go crazy. I suggest using a flat head screwdriver to scrap off the big chunks.
