Time to add some tunes to the wonder.

Started the day making the speaker tray for the "wayback". Got the wood cut and the holes cut out for the speakers. Used the measure twice and cut once method and it worked out with a good fit. Finished it up with a pop of red and mounted the speakers and got the wires connected and ready to run.









While I was getting the area prepped I noticed that the backsplash has some age damage and is warped. Didn't want to waste the day getting supplies to get it fixed but i went tonight to get some carpet and padding. Tackle that tomorrow.



Checked out the cd player fit for the stock spot. It will be a very tight fit and the faceplate is much smaller. There is alot of glue that needs to get cleaned off. Then I'll touch up with black paint. Any suggestions to get the glue off without leaving any scars?

very nice job on the tray. They have a bezel that would normal fit over the stock radio's 2 knobs and overlaps the dash. i 'wonder' if you can get one, and cut its opening to fit your detachable face radio. Might be a clean look.

Maybe you can make it fit in this kind of setup. It's a open bezel and a Bay radio delete plate.

Audrey - I'm seriously impressed! What are you doing next weekend? I need some bookshelves built.

You might want to think about putting some dynamat or other sound deadener on that firewall before you put the carpet back up.

I use some stuff called 'brown bread' from a canadian company called "B-Quiet". Pennies on the dollar compared to dynamat. I might have some if you want to sample it. Let me know!

I'll check it out if you want to bring it to the meeting. The size I need is 24"x36".

Got back to finishing the rear sound barrier

Cut back the warped sections of the mat and reglued to get it smooth



the original barrier. I took off the original padding.



Bought some felt carpet padding and used contact cement to adhere the felt



Finished look, nice and tight. I ran a line of black paint under the rear window seal to camoflage any gaps



Tray in and found some good storage spots



Ready for some tunes.



Got the rear speaker wire run to the front and put the futures in for the front speakers.

Have never installed a stereo/cd player before and the install instructions that came with the unit were almost non-existent. After some input I learned what I needed to do, but the sleeve for the unit was bigger than the stock opening in the wonder.

Got out the angle grinder and did some cutting to get the opening larger. B/c of the location it was very limited so I found a coping saw to get in the corners to make the cuts. Not the prettiest job, but once the bezel is back on it should be fine.



Trial and error and now the mounting bracket is in place and the cd player just needs to be secured. Now need to finish the wiring.

Wanted to finish up the cd install and have it ready for this weekend.

I ran all the speaker wires up to the front compartment even though I only have speakers in the rear at the moment, waiting for speaker kick panels for the front. I made the connections from the speaker wires to the relay speaker connections. This is what I want to confirm before I end up with a dead battery.

I ran the ignition wire (red) to a terminal that has constant power. I put my volt meter on the termnal when the car was off and got 12v reading.

The battery wire (yellow) I ran to a terminal that has no power or microwatts when the car was off but has 12v when the key was on.

I ran the black to ground.

This is what I got when I turned the key:




It has power, and when I turn the key off it powers down. Just want to be sure the electrical sounds okay since we all know that wiring makes me short circuit!!

I am now speechless. I just went out to see what fuse terminals I used to make the connections. After I got all the hardware on I put all the vents and hoses back on. Now I can't open the front lid. Is there a cable that runs down the side of the glove box that opens the hatch? I sure I must have unhooked it getting the hoses on. Any other ideas to open it????

I'm sure I''ll have a dead battery tomorrow or fried wires and no way to disconnect the the wiring I just did. Gotta love this bug!!

First things first , disconnect the battery. The glove box is just made of cardboard , I think I would make a hole and try to grab the cable with plyers and pull. Good luck !

I think this is a fairly common problem. Have someone push in on the hood, while you pull the cable form inside, then have them pull the hood outward. Anything?

behind the front apron there's a hole for easy access to the locking mechanism.

Audrey,Nice work,if i understand what you said correctly, then it Looks like you have the Red and the Yellow wire reversed.. The yellow wire on the radio should have constant power all the time whether the key is on or off.. the red wire should only be HOT when the ignition is on and should have no power when the ignition is off.. It will still work how you have it but you will see that the clock will reset every time you turn the car off and it wont remember your presets..
