Did you read the link I posted? LOL

I asked him to put some type of unique marking on them.
I trust Chico and he has great reviews but these aren't your "run of the mill" heads and I wanted to be sure that they are what arrives on my engine. Problem is, that if there were an unscrupulous individual - it would be pretty easy to replicate any green paint and my initials... So, Len suggested using paint that would change color if we hit it with a hot air gun.

When I set out for a new engine, I found "off the shelf" engines for around $2500, everyone on TS suggested some upgrades to cam, gear, lifters, and the heads - even if I am staying within a "stock" grade engine. So, after all is said and done the engine comes out closer to about $4300 before I put on the new FI harness, powdercoating, R/R etc.
In 2007 we stopped servicing used VW T4 bus heads. By that time around half of the castings we saw had severe cracks down in the exhaust ports and/or other evidence of heat related damage. It no longer made sense to put large amounts of time into servicing them when we can buy new, better castings.

As replacements we offer our Blueprint Special’s.

We start with a pair of new AMC 2.0 heads, strip the sub-par valves, seats, guides, springs, and retainers and toss them in the scrap barrel.

The Blueprint Specials are machined to accept new high temp, super durable valve seats that are fitted tight with the proper interference fit. The tungsten carbide exhaust seat material we use is wear rated up to 1800*F.

They’re built with new quality parts proven to be durable and reliable. The valve guides we use are silicon/manganese bronze and are extremely wear resistant.

The valves are tough aftermarket stock 2.0 size (39mm x 33mm) O.E. replacements.

The heads are machined and built with pride to factory specifications. Valve stem ht’s are set to +or- .005” for consistent valve train geometry.
Combustion chamber volumes are stock at ~49.5cc’s.

These heads come equipped with a .8mm raised step in the cylinder registers. This step simulates the O.E. head gaskets thickness and allows them to be deleted per VW instructions without installing spacers under the jugs to restore the unswept volume and deck height lost with the deleted gaskets. This raised step counts as deck ht and is added to the deck ht in the cylinders for determining the total deck.

Just asking as it peaked my interest. I think the only party's involved are the head builder, guys @ Fedex ( or other shipper), You, and engine assembler. I think the only real risk is the last one, unless you has some crazy split personality we don't know about. If you don't trust your builder, and are worried they may swap your heads out, should they be the guys working on your bus?

Can you really ever trust anyone? A type IV is not like a type I, and there aren't nearly as many builders out there - by a fraction. That said, I trust him, but why allow for any doubt when I'm shelling out more money on an engine than many people here have spent on buying whole cars. Lol These aren't off the shelf heads, but unless you knew where to look - or felt like taking them off when the engine arrives - there would be little way of knowing that the heads (which almost doubled the build costs) I spec'd were the heads that actually arrived.
If someone where inclined they could easily toss on a set of new heads for $700 and resell these for double.

Dropped off all the bus' parts at the powdercoater yesterday. The heads shipped from Hoffman Automotive Machine out to Chico Performance and all of the major phases of this project are nearly through. Just need to order the harness (cheap comparatively!) and get a little body work done after the install. Anything else - wheels, tires, curtains, stereo - would just be icing on the cake.

New engine is done, and shipping out tomorrow.
The powder coating should be finished by this week.
I still need to order the new FI harness for the top of the engine, but that won't stop everything else that is happening and shouldn't take long to get here... It is literally plug and play so even if we need to use the old one short term it is ok.

The engine went over budget by about $400, but I did add onto the build list.
The powder coating came in under by about $900 of what I had actually expected it to be based on previous items.
Still on the wishlist for spring/summer:
New Westfalia curtains
New steel wheels/tires
Upgrading the existing stereo
Headliner panels and kick panels

Spoke to Wayne today and he didn't realize that my screws were there. So, hopefully now that he knows they can start putting my engine back together.
Had a little SNAFU with the fuel line I wanted, turns out it's not carried locally anymore since Advanced bought out Roadside and CarQuest.
That said, dropped off some steeled at powdercoat. Tires are 4 years old and have some light cracking in the sidewalls.
Jesse wants the old rims and tires as rollers so I swapped with him.
Once the bus is back with me:

Body - at the very least fixing a bubble near the rear bumper mount.
Can fix the door jamb later
Reinstall all bumpers
Install new mirrors
Install the new camper windows
Tires
Install new ham radio

Maybe list:
New curtains
New drivers rear window
New stereo deck/front speakers

Both engine stands are being occupied. If he needs a 3rd, I can bring mine over.

Still, but for the hardware (admittedly needed) the engine has been there for three weeks...
I don't want my bus sitting there all spring, it still needs other stuff done beyond just the engine - and the longer it sits the more needs attention.
I want the bus back before Memorial Day, and would prefer back sooner so I have time to accomplish other projects - beyond what Tony is doing.
It hasn't been touched and I don't want a phone call a week before Memorial Day saying that the project is sidelined because they need parts that I could be ordering now.

You lose. My bus is going back tomorrow night. I told Tony to put me at the top of the list :-)
