purple stuff is real strong on a vw case and parts...as you use the purple, best to spray , then use a stiff brush , like brass only,or still poly even better then rinse real good. it is best not to let the purple dry on any metal surface...its that strong...i always start with purple to get rid of the heavy stuff and then more on the simple green...smells better too.. just my one cent opinion

Audrey . Could you get some pictures of the tin pieces that are "thin" . And the other with the stuborn screw stuck in it ? I'm sure some of us have these couple of troublesome pieces to get Your project on track . Perhaps a check list or a to do list .

Here's the thin tins!!
Nothing left on the 1/2 piece
Th 3/4 side
Chewed up
Needs a new hat!
Rough around the edges
All donations will be accepted.
GR plans to stop by the get the snapped bolts out (hopefully) and Manny said he would take a look at the brakes. Maybe a tech sessions in August???

I'm gonna try to head over Thursday and resolve the last few issues with the take apart. I also have some tin that should complete the engine.
I still have to order a fuel pump and some gaskets.

We'll make a punch list of what is needed and get it ordered. Then maybe by the end of August we can take it for a test ride??

Well GR spent a lot of time this afternoon working on getting those two snapped bolts out. The one holding the tin over the clylinder is a goner so now that cover will stay in place as is. The one for the intake manifold would not give, even after hard core drilling. Didn't get a clean pass for the bolt but we'll make it work!! You can see is it sticking up in the pic. Def have to learn to serve since this engine seems to be throwing lots of curves.
The problem areas:
Thanks to the many tin donations that were delivered I started cleaning up the pieces and will get them painted over the weekend. The pulley came off after applying a little heat and even got the clutch plate off to take a look and see what needs to be done to get it ready. GR made a list of items to get this put back together. The plan is to get it all back and do a test run before the install to be sure it's a go! (The elephant is peeking!!)
Might be looking at Aug 22 as a tenative date for a tech session if all the other pieces fall into place before that and if it is that a go I'll post it elsewhere.
thanks GR for the hours spent working today. I appreciate you being optimistic!

Audrey.... let me know when the backing plates for the alternator are ready. I'll stop by and put the alternator and fan together.
I check the distributor and it's a bit worn. I just so happen to have a 034 single vacuum/mechanical distributor I got for free and rebuilt a few weeks ago to replace it. Monday i'll order the new parts from GT and then hit the hardware store for the new nuts and bolts we need. I'll keep the receipts and we can settle up later.
The plan is to get the engine together and make sure it runs. Then we'll set a date to install it, do a valve adjustment and oil change. We'll also change the gear lube in the tranny.
At that point we'll let Manny start working on the brakes and i'll checkout the electrical system.
With luck AoT will be driving this to the BBQ.
