I'm trying to isolate some of the wiring issues. Last night I checked the brake switches and here's one good reason why there are no brake lights. The plug was on the switch but the wires are loose.



I have no PS tail light, but do have the turn signal. The grey/red wire is the one for the tail light. It was all gnarled up it a melted plastic casing so I freed it up and will run new wires to the fixture. Hope this get this solved. Once the brake lights get resolved and maybe the horn, it will be ready!



Changed the oil on Sunday night. It was like black patent leather, but the strainer did not have any sludge. One of the nuts was missing off the plate and when I put them back on the same stud would not take the nut so it must be stripped. I put oil in and nothing seems to be dripping so hope the fit is tight to hold.

I have some work to do on the interior linen closet. It must be for a different year since there was a section that did not have notches to meet the shape of the bus. Needs some work so will hold off on getting this installed until it done. Carpets down and curtains are in the works! I'm pooped!!

Think we'll see this on Saturday?

The cat photo reminded me of a slightly off-topic question: what's the deal with the convertible? Glenn said it was in sorta rough shape when I came over, but it's also pretty rare.

Been busy working on the electric. Got the PS tail light fixed and have been focusing on the brake lights. After I saw that the energized wire was off the connector I tested it and there was no power. I checked behind the fuse and there is no connection on the fuse terminal so I went through the process of running a new line to the switches. Had to get rid of the three prong housing to get the new line on directly to the switch. All was going good and I was getting ready to test the bad boy when the black wire connection to the first switch severed off inside the connector!



Have to provide the insurance with another photo so still waiting to get the ID cards to get to DMV. Told them I had a car show this weekend to see if they could expedite it. Still hoping to get to BBD which was my goal!

Looks like you understand how to troubleshoot and fix wiring.

Seems there's nothing you can't do when you set your mind to it.

What's next... welding?

Day is creeping up! I'm off of work today. Have some running to do for the weekend, but if you need help let me know! I have plenty of time to swing by to help with the wiring.m

Well, I took a pic of the bug in a borrowed garage and the insurance called today and told me they googled earth my address to help expedite the coverage and it was a clear as day that it was not the same address. I saved the rep the long winded version and fessed up so now I have to find another insurer. All this for a 40 year old box!!

Don't think the bus is making it this weekend to BBD, but I will still be going!

All I am good at is replicating what was there and hope that it works. If it doesn't work that's a different story.

So what it's not your address , You're not allowed to rent a garage ? You're not allowed to park it in your Dad's garage ? I have my bug in my mother in laws garage, does that void my insurance ?

OH NO! This is bad? Is there a clause against leaving your car in someone else garage? ie... my oval was in my my mom's garage for 5+ years. Or even renting a garage somewhere? Wow.... keep us posted.

Exactly Raj , Does every collector have a 5 or 10 car garage ? I don't think so.

When I first bought my bus, and put it on Hagerty I told them I had a rented garage. I gave the address of a friend (and ironically, Im now living in that very house) but they knew the car wasnt stored at my residence.

Aud, tell them your renting a garage at my place. Theres three here, if they drive by, or google maps it they can see it plain as day.

Feel free to give them my number, and if they need to call I can tell them just the same.

How much you wanna rent for? LOL

Well, made it out to the BBD. Made alternate insurance arrangements and after 2 trips to DMV got plates for the bus. Had a smooth trip out and the weekend was great.

Its maiden voyage out east, had a good ride.


I had changed the oil the other night and when I was putting the acorn nuts back on they were striped so lost a quart of oil parked at the campsite. Called it the Exxon Valdez but BusBBQ had some spare nuts and was able to get things tightened up. Pan after the ride home and overnight.



Only issue that surfaced was that the oil cooler seals are shot so need to get that addressed in the next few weeks. another tech session to get them replaced will be posted.

Bummer, they would of been easy to do when the engine was out and the fan shroud was off.

Not for a few weeks.... Debbie has me busy with the "Honey Do" list now that the weather has turned nice and since it's "show season" , they have to get done or i can't go.

congrats! bus looks great - must be really fun to drive....

the oil cooler seals are easy to change, but you'll need to take the motor out.

I went local to TireTown. I think they have a few locations but this was in Rockville Centre. You can get an online quote from them. I think they are very reasonable and he offers good quality tires and doesn't push the ones that are top of the line and big bucks. These tires plus the ones I just put on my Tribute are Cooper Tires.

I did buy some tires online that were 135's for the bug I have that has a lowered front beam. But then I had to have them mounted and balanced and also pay for shipping so it really didn't save much.

With the two trips I made this past week, the tires made me feel alot more confident than waiting for one of them to blow. When they took the ones off the bus that came with it the tire guy said they had not been made since the late 80's!

Thanks for the tip Audrey. The Squareback has a set of dry rotted deathtraps on it that we're gonna have to replace real soon!

If you like, you can have what's currently on our Squareback. Only problem is, in case of catastrophic tire failure, the manufacturer probably fell along with the Berlin Wall so all warranties are void.
