Put some brake cleaner to work on the clutch pieces and now just hopefully the engine will go back together eaiser than it came apart.

That's a red VW stamp on the clutch I uncovered while cleaning. Hidden treasure?

GR spent the afternoon putting together the engine and it turned out sweet!! The attention to detail and sequence of putting the parts back on was a real learning experience. I am so appreciative of his time and talent. Thanks GR.

Getting the tins back on and the alternator stand. Cleaned up nice!

Few more things to get and tweak to finish the engine work, but today was a giant leap.
Have to add some paint to touch up and cover a few more spots, but it looks neat.

GR made it look easy and gave me some challenges for the months ahead.

Time to keep moving forward!

Well the proiect is moving forward even if the white wonder is not there yet. GR and I got the engine installed today. His endless expertise and my superhuman strength got the engine lined up and it is locked and loaded.

Found out that the front wheels are locked. It rolled about two months ago so this was a surprise. Front rotors are rusted and shot so it's time to work on the brakes. The engine didn't start since the battery has been sitting for years, but we did get most of the lights to turn on after we cabled it to my truck.

It feels great to get this far and really getting excited to see it on the road. thanks GR for how hard I made you work today!

AOT..... shoot some wd40 or liquid wrench on those front calipers....... smash them with hammer... they will break free.

Always a pleasure to work with someone who's motivated and gets down and dirty when they have to.

I ran up a parts list and to redo the brakes, replacing everything... rotors, calipers, wheel bearings, drums, shoes, hardware, wheel cylinders, hoses, adjusters and master are about $350 in parts.

I also ordered a new battery.

The oil needs to be changed and I cracked the tranny fill and drain plugs so we can change the gear lube.

There was nothing from the starter when we jumped it from the truck. I hope it was just that the battery was drawing all the amps, preventing the starter from spining. If not... a starter is easy enough.

Audrey needs to cleanup the inside and work on the driver's window.

We're close... very close.

Let's pick a date to do the brakes. We'll need to bring an impact gun to crack the 17mm caliper bolts and the rear axle nuts.

Without cleaning the garage i couln't work on the car That and driving all over creation looking at schools and or taking my other son back to school )Syracuse, Watson hall). Yesterdy i left 5:20 Am arrvied home at 6:10 with a stop in Whitney Point to visit Mom and Dad!!

Spent some hours working on getting the interior cleaned up. Found some of the missing hardware under the seats and in the glove box. Took up the front and rear rubber mats and seem to have some rust issues. The rear floor behind the driver sounds a little thin and the shop vac lifted off a layer.



Came across a little daylight by the brake pedal. There was a bottle top lodged between the bottom of the pedal and the floor. When I shimmed it out it exposed two spots that had worn through. Wonder if the bottle top was the fix or the cause. It is the white spots in the photo.



Always good to have a another pair of eyes and hands!!


Needs some more TLC but made some progress. Time to make a shopping list.

POR 15 is best for the rust. The hole under the pedal can be patched from underneath.

There's a few members that can weld and it's 'doesn't have to be pretty... just has to keep the water out.

As soon as I have the battery in my hands we'll see if we can get it started.

She's a "Screamer"... and the engine runs also.

First problem was the starter would not spin. I quickly found the wire from the ignition switch was not connected. We put some gas in a container and dropped the fuel hose in it. After a few cranks it wanted to start, but wouldn't. I choked off the carb and it would catch but not stay running unless I blocked off the top of the carb. I figured there was a massive vacuum leak and dreaded the idea of having to change the intake manifold gaskets with the engine in.

And then Audrey comes around the car and says.......

Anyway when it finally started and ran nice i heard someone screaming. Audrey was rather excited and I was relieved that it wasn't a vacuum leak.

Next was the gas tank. I removed the plug in the fuel hose from the tank and... nothing. Just a few drops. We then removed the sender on top of the tank and it's half full. So i'll bring an electric pump over and we'll have to empty the tank. I just hope the hardline in the body is not clogged. If so it's not gonna be fun replacing it.

With the new battery in we have headlights, front and rear turn signals, parking lights and brake lights. The radio works but the horn doesn't.

We're getting close... brakes are the next major project.

BTW... Audrey did a great job cleaning up the inside. I slid the seats forward to get the battery in and they slid smoother than 90% of the cars out there.

Wow, what a great sound to hear that engine roar!! Once it got fed some gas it purred like a lion. To get to this day with some of the bumps in the road I've had was a real treat. I appreciate all of the support that you send my way and I hope GR's ear drums has stopped "ringing"!!

It's on to the next challenge, but this was a special moment today!!
