Re: End of the season (it's BACK)
Spent some time putting the fan on, alternator, rest of the engine tin and thermostat. I then spun the fan and... it rubs. It didn't rub when I first put it in the shroud but when the shrouds is on the engine it must of tracked. I decoded to walk away and deal with in at another time.

Re: End of the season (it's BACK)
Did you say you just recently got the tin and shroud decoated? Maybe they put it on a bit too thick and it breached the tolerances. Those fans can be a pain.

Re: End of the season (it's BACK)
Yes they were painted again, but they media blast off the old paint.
I needed a good nights sleep and it helped. I took it apart, removed 2 shims from the fan and put it back together. No rubbing....
I also installed the thermostat and tested it with a heat gun.
Added the oil pressure line and fuel line. Just a few more things and it's ready to install.

Bags of hardware, all labeled so I can get it back together.

Re: End of the season (it's BACK)
Gear lube is in.

Checkout my old rear tranny mounts. They are twisted and cracked. So new mounts were installed.

Here's the chunks when I dumped the gear lube last November.

And here's where they came from.

VWB Rhino case, very heavy duty.

The man stamps his name.

New mounts, new throwout bearing and new cross shaft bushings.

That tranny looks massive, just like a rhino. I'm sure you're anxious to get it back on the road.

I'm not in a rush. After 28 years and 475,000 miles, it's not like I can't wait another week or so.AoT wrote:I'm sure you're anxious to get it back on the road.

I thought you used Swepco gear lube. What's up with the Valvoline?

Re: End of the season (it's BACK)
I did use Swepco, but Gary Berg very specifically states to use Valvoline VV831 gear lube. So that's what i'll use.
Wanna buy a gallon of Swepco 201? I'll give you a deal.
