I figured that the LI chapter of NAMBLA folded when Paul Greco went south.

The other night i pulled the pedal cluster for some R & R as the accelerator pedal was frozen. I took it all appart and took all (most) of the rust off and repainted it.

heres a shot of it before i pulled it. I'll post an after pictures tomorrow.

Here's a couple of shots of the driver side floor. it's anything but solid but i might have to make it work until i can find a floor pan. I freed up the seat and the seat track looks in good shape becuase that will ahve to be reused.

This weekend i hope to scroung up enough stuff for a tune-up, reapcle the vacuum lines on the As, check the brakes & lights and with any luck it should be ready to roll!!

Does anyone know if the back half of a bug pan is the same size as the back of the Ghia pan? I'll be checking this weekend anyway, but just curious.

Thanks

The auto isn't badddd. Just don't expect it to be fast. It's a nice experience in traffic that's for sure.
I kinda like that car. It has just enough rust to look cool.

Is this the DVG, or a magic 8-ball convention?

Over the weekend i put the brake pedal cluster back together with new springs and installed it back in the car.

Image

Then i pulled the gas tank and flushed it out, it was in good shape, and repalced all the fuel line and installed a new metal fuel filter under the tank. I blew air through the hard fuel line and put it all back together.

Image

Since i have not gotten a new ignitions swithc i made a small bracket for unde rthe dash and wired in a on -off switch and a bush botton start. The psuh button broke so i resorted to tocuing the two wire stogether and it fired right up. I was able to shift into reverse aned low so the AS seemed good.

After few mins the engine stalled and would not re-start. After checking a few things a poured alittle gas in the carb and it fired so i knew i had a feul problem.
After a family Birthday i pulled the carburator and found no gas int he bowled bu this residue.

Image

Image

After removing all the jets and needle valves i sprayed the carb with cleaner and them blew out all the holes and orafices, then re-installed it.

Before i connected the fuel line i cranked it a few times to get a fresh flow of gas (i guess i should have done this in the first place).

And no, that is not my coffee!!

Image

Image

connected everything up, cranked it a bit to get gas int he bowl and it fired right up. Does not want to idle but i have not set the timing or adjusted the carb yet so i'm not too worried about that.

i did try and shift and but it would not go into any gear. I have to check all the wiring to see if i knocked something off, but i'm making progress. Need to check the vacuum lines on the AS as well.!

Discovered te problem with the autostick not shifting was te result of me forgetting to put a fuse back. Dumb but easy fix.

Took it for a short ride and it had surprising pep. Couldn't get it into 2nd in the neighborhood. Once I get it insured I'll give it a good run.

Next issues are the headlights don't work, no power to te fuse box, have to check switch.
Generator light is staying while running so I need to check that out.
Couple of other bulbs need to be replaced.

I've been chiping away at the list of things to get the car road worth. The other night I figured out that since the ignition swithc is not working and i had basicaly hot wired it the headlight swithc was not getting power. I ran a wire fromt he run side of my on/off switch to Pin X ont he headlight swithc and no i have headlights. I had to clean all the fuse contacts as the lights were intermittent but they are working now.
Checked out all the other lights and after cleaning some contacts r, replacing come bad bulbs and tightending some loose connections, the running lights, turn signals, backup, emergency flashers and brakes lights all work.

The generator was not charging so last night i found the top brush as rusted in palce and nat making contact. I had to chip it out and then after cleaning the brush holder installed a new brush from my stash of aprts and that's now fixed.

The last electrical problem is the horn. I jumped 12 volts to the horns and niether one work. I remvoed them boath and bench tested them and still niether worked. The look in good shape and i'm surprised that both would fail together but i am going to take them apart and see if they can be claened and made operational again. Found a great post on The Samba explaining in detail the whole process, so hope that is the problem.

Still some nimor things to do:

Patch some of the holes in the floor (temp until I can located some pans)
Give it a good tune-up. Adjust valves, plugs, wires, cap, points rotoa and condensor
Time engine
repair sticking door handle on drivers side.

Using the info from TheSamba i took the two horns apart and there are a set of contcts that were very corroded and not make a good contact so i think that is the problem. I took all the parts and cleaned them up good, then removed the rust fromthe diaphram and primed to get ready for paint tonight.

My only concern is 1/2 of the contat points came loose, so that could be a problem. I put it back together and it is held in palce by the pres fromt he other half but i'm not sure it is going to work properly. I guess i could try to use some metal weld, I'll see how it works first

Here are some picts of it as I took it apart.
back to horns

Under diaphragm - Coil and magnet Coil had continuity

Backside of Diaphragm

Terminal on back of horn - Removed to be cleaned up

I think this is the resonator. - Here it is removed from diaphragm and seperated to see all the parts.

I primed the diaphragm and will paint tonight then get it all assembled and test it out!
