Rob,
My older one Liam was out there last night for a few. It was cool having him there with me. He was using the magnet to ' retrieve' the valve spring keepers as I touched up the valves. He gotta kick outta it.
Some the painted tin that I have been banging out at night at time permits. Trying to keep this low budget so rattle can is fine for me.
The heads im using are Mexican castings. They looks ok, but not prefect. I have a set of very mile Mex heads too, but wanted to save them for another build. Never did this before, but gave it a shot.... I yanked all the valves and lapped them in. The seating area came out very nice. Also did the cyl tops where it meets the head.
Parts getting ready for assy. Need to run the plugs in to make sure their are no issues. Also, need to find some under cyl tin, as this motor had the t3 super cool tins. Not really my favorite.
Might be able to assy the long block tonight... lets see how the natives are tonight.

Tried to get into the garage when I could over the weekend.
Long Block all back together
started to install the tins, muffler, boxes, intake
Genny and shroud
got it installed fri night, but was out there til 230am. For whatever reason, the starter wouldnt crank. I was tired of fighting with the droopy trans and having only one good jack. So i called it quits. Got back out there Sun and replaced the starter. Started right up but has some issues and a kind of a knocking sound. Oil was very low, so addressed that Monday night. Erratic starts that sound like a fuel issue, so need to play with some carbs. Crazy week coming up this week, so hoping I can this going.

been banging away at this thing at night when i can escape out there. I have a oil leak on one side and still fighting with carb issues. I have it running but idle is not cooperating. Given the amount of other stuff it needs, might just go as is. Not sure if Im driving this or the thing, but the plan is that they will both be at flanders. Just got my pop up tent canvas last night, so i'll try to get it installed by Sat am. The fun never ends!

That pop-up tent takes time and patience, I would hold off. I usually sleep with the top down at Flanders as it tends to be pretty loud at night .

You need to remove the plugs in the upper heater boxes (#2 and #4). They are for transit so they openings don't get crushed. Otherwise they will restrict the amount of air passing through them... and you'll have minimal heat.

thanks Glen. I actually saw that and it is stamped " remove before install'. Thats the muffler it came with and who knows how old it is, so I left it as is. I dont think i wanna run the bug muffler anyway, so I'll swap them out before the need for heat anyway.
thanks though!

Somewhat related point.... while playing with the carb after a drive, I notice the preheat pipes were super hot. I cant believe this, but I have never noticed this in a ACVW. It makes sense as they are attached to the exhaust, but why run a burning hot pipe into the engine that is looking for cool air to blow over the cyl. What gives?

It prevents the gas from pooling in the intake manifold and helps reduce stumbling when giving it gas.

I know what it does, but should it be hot as hell?

It's right off the #2 and #4 exhaust ports.... it's going to be hot.

Raj:
I had carb/idle issues with my bus for a long and had a few different carbs in there but nothing changed. Last summer the idle ran so high it sounded like the engine was always racing and it would not knock down. BusBq offered some time to help and it turned out that the vacuum hose from the engine up to the brake servo booster was like a sieve. It was shot and you could feel the air pulling through the hose line. As soon as it was replaced the engine purred. Have you checked that out yet?

Thanks Aud.
This 71 intake I think its a One year only ( will hunt for it at the swaps). This one's hose looks decent, but who knows what that means. I sprayed the engine side with fluid and had no change in engine rpm. All engine side clamps are tight. Lemme crawl under the beast tonite and chase it fwd. True, that the issue could be brake servo side. Good point oh 71 bus guru!

I agree with Tom, make the tent lower on your list. It'll be chilly and loud. I never keep my top up at the shows at night.

Yeah did the engine spray and that didn't prove anything. BusBQ took the carb out and gave it a good cleaning. No change. Only when the hose got clamped numerous times moving closer to the servo did it make a difference. It was only when it was under 12 inches from the servo that it made the idle change.
I also replaced the hose valve between the servo and engine and that showed an improvement in the braking as well. As an FYI I bought the replacement vacuum line at a marine supply.

Thanks Audrey. I looked at the hose, and it looks horrible. I slapped a clamp on the front for good measure and we'll see if that helps.
I got the canvas installed Friday before Flanders, just needs some minor adjustments to be done done.
The wife land towed the bus to flander, as the bus didnt have any confidence miles at that point. Good thing too, bc at flanders, the bus popped a rear hard brake line. That would have been bad if I had the family in it and lets say while doing the 'bob and weave' on the GW.
Gotta tell you.... the family loved the bus. We slept four just fine. They are already asking me about when we are going again. Love when I can mix my two favorite things... family and VW.s Throw in some good old VW freinds.... life is good.

Anything the family will be riding in needs to have a thorough brake overhaul. New lines, wheel cylinders calipers and Master. That is precious cargo!!

Replaced the front part of the hose and that seems to correct the idle issues ( thats Aud!) Its still a bit low but is tolerable, just need to be weary of the potential stalls.
Finally took it for a good ride to Hicks with the family. Ran nice on the highway. Brakes are strong but a bit grabby in the front. Rears need to be adjusted or replaced. Im going to drive it some more this week in prep for the holiday parade. ( if thats the fam decides on thats what they want to take)

Drove the ole girl to work this am. Runs/drives not too shabby, but still needs some tinkering.
- still has low idle, sometimes dies; I have a few other carbs I'll try out and swap around. I'll give one a real good bath and rebuild and hopefully its not something more like a throttle shaft bushings.
- driver side front brake is ' sticky'. Locks up the one wheel during anything more then gradual slow down. Anyone have any ideas if the stock front discs have any adjustments? Im thinking maybe bleed the fronts ( possible the pass front needs more bite/ has some air) or tighten up the rears to add more rear bias.
- parking brake doesnt ' hold' as i think it should. Again could be a rear brake shoe issue. Who knows if the stars are rusted up, so once I get the ghia back on all fours, I'll check it out.

Bad break hose or the caliper isn't sliding.

Next year we out that beast up on your trailer, and decorate it like a float with fake snow, snowmen, and all that jolly good shit. Lol
