(Maybe Manny's friend Pepe camped out here in his younger days.)

Wow, a picture is worth a thousand words!! Glad you think this one has some charm!!

The gauntlet has been thrown down and the challenge has begun. Looking forward to working with the talented brains behind the madness to bring this engine back to life. Time to saddle up and get this wagon train rolling!! Thanks to all for your support, past, present and future!

I'm gonna try to bring the alternator over to GT. Tony is going to have it checked.

Tom thats one of Glenns. Its attatched to a sawed off bellhousing so that he can ground start motors. It bolts on and off and he can spin the motors up without having them in a car.

What goes around, comes around. I remember when you gave me this list. Now it's back on mine!

The beauty of recycling VW parts!

I got a fan shroud from GA from Ken and a crank pulley from Raj.

If anyone has a set of good solid upper cylinder tins let me know. if not we can reuse the old ones.

Will tins from a 40hp work ? I have tins on a motor that came out of a 64 .

No... they have to be 1600DP tins. The old ones will do, they are just a bit flimsy.

looking really good....if you apply pur 15 to the tins the product will help try at least two coats....

....Glenn before I install my motor I would love to borrow your starter set up to check things out....

Good thing you guys decided to remove the fan housing. With that much crap in there if the engine fired up I'm sure it would have self-destructed in short order!

So I did a valve adjustment and checked compression.

50 - 100 - 50 - 30

Not good... I sprayed some PB Blaster in the cylinders and cranked it for 30 seconds. I'll repeat after a few hours and recheck.

I hope it "pumps up", or it's Plan D.

I'm "wondering" if this is ever going to be a 'wonder' or a worry! :?
Should I put it on the organ donor list?

at this point why dont we just replace the rings at a minimum, or if we have to P and C's, maybe a valve job while the heads are off.

Taking this engine apart is a can of worms.

All the exhaust studs look badly rusted and the odds are most of them will break. The head studs are also rusted and might be a problem. And who's to say the valves are not the problem. So to do pistons, cylinders and heads you're looking at $500 in parts.

GA still has his engine, but i'm thinking of getting this one started and checking compression when its warm.

It runs....

But not very good. After letting it get hot, i remove the plugs and checked compression again. Not much better.

75 - 125 - 70 - 40

Time for Plan D.

I already tried some PB Blaster and cranked it for 30 seconds. Then let it site for a few hours and applied more. I then checked the compression and it was barely better. Tony suggested running it until it gets hot but he doubts it would help... it did not.

Short of a top end rebuild, this not not going to move a car.

Plan D is a engine that Glenn A has.

this is what I posted under '74 Gigggles in (Tech Discusions) a few weeks back:
Ok. You have been warned that any projects that I participate in have a tendency to have lots of bumps in the road so just be prepared to giggle as we move forward. I won't be offended as you roll over in laughter when you see what greets me on a good day!

And believe me when I read your post I got a good laugh!! Move over Mike, make room for me!!

Glad we have a plan D! How far along in the alphabet is this going to take?

"'A" didn't work and it better not be "T'"!!

I am on a giggle high!!   Better laughing than the alternative.

All in a days work.

The good new is the alternator is good, I have most of the tin, the carb on that engine is OK and so is the fuel pump.
