can anyone show me or tell me the difference between Type 1,2,3,4 engines im gonna look at a shortblock that the seller says may have a universal case so wont have the letter markings to id

Type 1 is a upright engine used in Beetle, Ghias and Things. Type 3 are the same as a Type 1 but have a fan in the rear.. they're Pancake. A Type 4 is a pancake but a totally different case... it's a "big block".
There's no such thing as a Type 2 engine. Early Buses has Type 1 and then in 72??? they got Type 4.

center cam bearing pitted and had some gack in oil hole possibly lifter break in lube?

other cam bearings look fresh

lifter looks like it nver saw a pushrod

ut bottoms seem pitted

maybe break in lube?

There's a large snap ring holding the brass gear on. The cam gear is pressed on. If you heat it with a torch it will expand and come off.

got crankshaft polished and cleaned today

used some 1200 wet/dry and brushed out the oil feeds
