Working on getting the CD/radio going in the bus. Got some camping to do. I have the speaker wires connected and just need to hook the wires up to the fuse box. Did a check and I am missing the antenna cable.

Anyone have one to spare (or sell) or is this something I can pick up at Radio Shack? The threaded section and pin are there so just need the cable to run to the rear of the unit.

Audrey, the cable is universal. You can grab one at any parts place or radio shack.
Though, I might have one. I'll check in the morning. I've gone through like 3 antennas which have snapped off through various (traumatic) experiences. Lol. Each new antenna mast has come with a new cable, that I never used. So I think I still have one or two laying around.

I can give you the one from my bus Audrey. My antenna is broken.

Did a little housekeeping tonight. The low lights on the bus were nasty and cloudy so ordered up new ones and seals. Looks mucho better and give off more light!







The visor clip was broken and the visor was held up with a clamp. Found the replacements and got them in place. Love the little details.





Got a punch list of things to work on.

Not sure if you know the history of this.

The figure is an original Hummel which have roots in Germany from the early 1900's. I found it at the swap in Litchfiled 2 years ago for $1. Her head was glued on. Currently one in good condition can fetch $75. I was giving her a dusting.

Kismet that this figure is Hummel #74, that's the year of the Wonder!!

I am going to try and get her back in one piece (sorry Tom) for quite a few sentimental reasons.

I understand about Hummels, I was made to be a scared little boy whenever I was near them. Lladros too.

What else to do on Labor Day weekend then labor. Got a good workout trying to get the headliner done on the bus. I decided to use FRP. The birch panels were pricey and as usual I am putting my own stamp on this beast!!

When I took the frayed front headliner panel out last year I was smart enough to sketch out a template of the contours. I found the size specs off the samba. Yesterday was spent measuring and cutting to get a good fit.

This is the blank canvas. I taped around the front window to freshen up the paint and cover the lousy job the PO did when it got painted.


This was the cut panel ready for a test fit.


The panels rest on a track that runs up above the windows and the tight fit bends them and keeps it taut. There is an H channel that keeps them stationary. Trying to get the panel into the track and them wiggle them into the H channel was labor intensive. As with most vw projects it takes multiple tries to get a good fit.


I opted to stay away from most of the standard sound deadening products. They are expensive and have petroleum based ingredients. I used egg crate that I adhered to the inside roof.


After I got the fit down I glued natural burlap as the finishing look. It matches the other colors in the bus so I felt it was a good choice. There is no H channel up by the front windshield so I tapped in a few screws for support.


After the front panel got done, the project moved along a little faster. This section was all square so the cutting was less.


There was a lot of positioning and repositioning the location of the panels so that the edges would be captured in the H channel. At times it was crazy trying to position the 4x4 panels in the bus with only two hands so I got creative. Used the feet to hold up the panel to tap the H channel over the panel edge.


Got two panels done. One more to go. I had bought 2 sections on Friday but wasn't sure if it would work so back to HD to get the third. I am going to use the scrap pieces to make new front kick plates and maybe even redo the front door panels.


The true test will be when I drive the bus. The noise level should be improved and just hoping the panels stay up!! There is only a 1/4 inch lip on each side of the H channel to secure the edge of the panel. Measurements had to be spot on to get it right. Had to make some adjustments on the fly so hope my effort pays off!

I don't think you needed the self tapping screws in the front. Generally the now of the headliner itself holds it in place. Though, I'm not sure if the foam and FRP would have as much structural rigidity as the OG wood.

I was thinking of you yesterday while helping my buddy build the (formerly) yellow buggy that used to be my avatar. The pedal cluster was reassembled at some point by someone who put the brake return spring in backward. I remembered your writeup on that, and how you broke it down so everyone could understand how it works. The pin in the clutch pedal was really in there good, but it eventually came out, thanks to your writeup.

Very cool, only problem is reading this continues making me want a bus. Ok start the chant, need a house first, need a house first! Can't live in the bus. Well actually....

She's actually really solid. That's just acne on the nose, with no break through rot.
Did get tapped in the bum, and has a punch over the drivers battery tray.
