after the pedals i hit the rear torsion bar bushings and covers they were shot Image Image i couldnt get the torsion arms off because the rear arm was a bit to large Image so i grond off just enough to clear the arm Image then cleaned all the gack out and painted and replaced bushings and covers Image Image Image Image Image Image so i think im done with the chassis time to hit the body

so i went to bolt theheater channels in today i notched the passenger side to clear the seat track Image found that the foward nut/bar thing on both sides are not tapped correctly Image and the bottom nuts are off center and cant get the bolts to thread in so i ground away some metal so the bolts will start Image but will have to wait till monday to bring a tap home from work

Interesting, I don't think I ever saw someone bolt the heater channels to the pan before they were welded to the body. Are you going to remove the old channels from the body and lower it onto the pan and then weld ?
I'm not an air cooled snob , I like them all !

the old channels removed themselves/rusted away so i have to bolt the new ones to the pans and line things up like to the front fire wall and rear body to pan panels then graft them into the existing body Image Image

yes Tom im gonna bolt the channels to the pan set the body down onto the 2 mounts under the gas tank and the 2 in each rear fender area Square things up and and cut away any rust on the body.i bought new lower front door hingeposts and rear Quarters to weld in so im not gonna weld the old crap to the new channels just float the body on those 4 spots and and cut in and weld the new parts then weld to the channels Image Image Image

so got back on the bug seems they didnt tap the bolt/bars all the way thru so the bottom of the the channel bolt holes were tapered. the guy at cip1 said to tap them from the bottom with a 10x1.5 tap,but you cant run a tap from the tapered end up theres a 359 percent chance of not getting the tap into the thread thats there already and cross threading the bolt bars. so i figured i would cut a hole in the top of the channel and run a tap from the inside out. Image Image turns out the bar is enclosed in a box so i had to open the box to acess the the bar Image Image then after all this it turns out the bar wasnt tapped to 10x1.5 because the tap nor drill bit that comes with the tap wont go in from the top. so now i can just drill it out and tap it from the bottom Image Image close the box Image and seal up the hole Image and got away with drilling and tapping from the bottom on the other channel with out cutting it open. i dont know what size they were tapped to from the begining but it wasnt 8mm or 10mm so im thinking 3/8

Record breaking progress! (This, coming from a guy who took 12 years to bolt a fiberglass tub to a pan and hit it with some krylon)
