Well, that only took 3 months, but it looks like it was worth the wait! Sharp looking.

Finally took it for a real drive... on the highway and brought it up to 90mph. It feels nice and handles well.

So far i'm happy with them.

Oh... they do spin fairly easy. Maybe they need to be worn it a bit, maybe they were not hot enough to be sticky.

So I did a little math to figure out how much off my speedo is now that I have a even smaller front tire than before.

A stock size tire is a 165-15 which rotates 794 times per mile. My new front tire is a 195/55-15 which turns 860 times per mile. That means when my speedo is reading 65mhp i'm actually going only 60mph. I guess that will keep me from getting speeding tickets.

On the flip side my rear tire is a 205/60-15 which is slightly larger than the previous 195/60-15. This reduces the engine rpm. So at 3000rpm in 5th gear i'm actually doing 69mph (speedo would read 75mph)and at 3500rpm i'm doing 81mph (speedo would read 87mph).

Now that's cruising.

It's called MS-Excel. I wrote it years ago. Just plug in the numbers and it does the work.

You can download it here: http://www.glenn-ring.com/tech/tranny_calc.xls

OK... my rubbing is fixed. I used to get the front tires rubbing on road dips at highway speeds and when taking the clover leaf exits at high speed.

I just finished a nice drive and there was no rubbing on the dips or exits it has in the past. So going from a 195/60-15 to a 195/55-15 did the trick.

Time for rear brakes. I never did them when I rebuilt the car back in 1998 so the time has finally come. I replaced everything in the rear, backing plates, drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, hardware and hoses.

I doubt it, but 500,000 should not be a problem.

Glenn,

Looks real nice but it's not fair that you get to do your work in a shop with a lift and not in the garage or driveway!!!

Glenn how come you never switched over to rear disc ?

Re: 74 Beetle

There's no advantage to them. I can easily lock the brakes and rear disc won't make it stop any quicker. Most aftermarket rear systems use inferior parts and quite possibly replacement parts might not be available in 20 years... yes I will have the car then.
