Very, very cool bus. I love the old window/bumper stickers, and that interior... Beautiful!

Funny you should ask. The mother was coming back from visiting her daughter in college in 1969. On a highway in Ohio she was cut off and put the bus on it's side. It slid on the road for a couple of hundred feet apparently and the dent on the roof is from the guard rail on the highway. A couple of truckers stopped, flipped the bus back upright, and she drove home. I have the repair order from July of 69 for the repairs done. It still has scrapes on the passenger rear quarter by the vents.

Welcome to the Bus world! How is the engine? Is the steering loose or tight? Looks great. Good luck!

She didn't get cut off, the wind blew her over ... maybe several feet. The only way a VW could slide that long is if it's being towed!!

You cut off the last word of my sentence in that quote...."apparently". I wasn't there. In fact I wasn't even born yet. It happened so long ago, Glenn R was still young. Maybe you're right but it's still a pretty cool story.

So I have been driving the hell out of my bus since September and have put over 2300 miles on it. Most recently I took a trip up to Buffalo, NY with my three brothers. We did about 1100 miles in the 3 day trip with only 1 minor breakdown. Luckily I had lots of tools and parts with me so we were back on the road in 5-10 minutes. After that trip I decided to give the bus some TLC. I even ordered some new parts from WW which came today. This is what I did so far:
New Side View Mirror and clamp
New exhaust pipe (the old one fell off on the NY Thruway on the way home).
A new door strap (note the condition of the original next to it).
And after 46 years on the road................SEATBELTS!
Next on the list is the not so fun stuff:
New axle boots, drain and refill transaxle and gear reduction boxes, new brake shoes and hardware, ignition tune up, rebuild and install original fuel pump, fix electric choke on the carburetor, and finally an oil change and another valve adjustment. Over the winter I am having some sealing wax red paint made up in a spray can and I will spray the passenger door which is in primer (and has been since 1969).

Ah, man. So close, so close...
Have you thought about hitting the primer with oven cleaner and 000 steal wool to see what's left of the original paint on the door?
Don't know how bad it was scratched up when it flipped, but it would be fun to see.

The door was replaced with a green one under the primer so it needs to be re-sprayed. I took the primer off of the cargo doors with grafitti remover and 0000 steel wool and it worked great. The paint underneath was mint, I don't know why they covered it in primer to begin with.
