Concrete or Blacktop

Post by Glenn »

I got pricing for my driveway and to my surprise concrete is a bit less than blacktop. I was told that blacktop needs a border which increased the material and labor cost.

So which would you pick and why?

Concrete, if done correctly, proper thickness, rebar done correctly, will last forever. Asphalt has a life expectancy and needs to be sealed every other year or so, eats kids bike kick stands, and your boat trailer will sink in it on hot days. Surprised concrete was cheaper.
Asphalt will hide ur oil drops, something I'm thinking u have no issues with though!

Def do concrete if possible.
Pavers are even prettier if doable. I like the look of the concrete/ paver mix

Concrete can be colored or stamped also. I have blacktop and it looks like ass now (about 5-6 years old). Some spots heaved from the winter cold n water getting under. Ive heard mix things about sealcoating also. Mainly just for looks. I have boards to go under jacks and jack stands so nothing sinks through. Had a drop if brake cleaner hit the asphalt and created a whole. Had a contractor tell me he can make concrete look like asphalt when i was pricing out a garage reno.

For all the above reasons and I think it has a better resale value IMHO. Plus in the hot dog days of summer you avoid that tar smell!

:P
Keep working at it and it gets done!!
