Hey Charlie, I just checked into this thread, I got an ECU, BusDepot actually had them $79.00 refurb! I couldnt beat it.

Funny thing, is the Bosch number comes back on an auto trans, but the VW number comes back to a manual. Who woulda thought.

Got the bus back, was running nice, picked it up Saturday and did some errands with the ol'guy. Was nice to be in the bus again. Took it out to Ronkonkoma, around town for a few errands then washed it up for etown. I set off to head to Valley Stream around 1130pm on Saturday and planned to stay at the grandparents house a few miles from the State Trooper station. I made it to the Wantagh on the Northern State and began to get a high rpm miss again. So I turned back. It was too late to get stuck, too late to arrange a ride for the morning. So I just went home. I took the bus back down to GT. The hesitation/non-idling is gone. There were some issues with it running real rich which seemed to have been exacerbated by my failing ECU. So we'll see where I wind up now.

Well, we have a little progress... Following the replacement of all my FI seals, the auxiliary air regulator, and the ECU, along with testing the airbox and checking timing, plugs wires connections grounds and wire condition, we found that the bus would idle better. I was able to drive it, but after about 20 miles, while at highway speed again noticed a sporatic but increasingly more noticeable missing at high speed.

Back to square one, found the points were sticking ever so slightly. Took the bus back out today, and did well on some errands, noticed that when cold it still doesnt want to just go, but now (unlike before these issues) needs a couple minutes to warm up.

Took the bus to school tonight, and while on the way home noticed the hesitation again, at about 63 MPH. While less frequent, and not as dramatic I suspect that had I continued pushing it, the sensation would have become more noticeable.

Im running short on what to do here. Im thinking next step might be replacing the distrubutor? I know the one I have isnt 'correct' but its been in there for 3 years, and untill now has never given any inkling of an issue.

I believe these numbers are correct for a 1977 Fuel Injected type 4
VW 021-905-205P, Bosch 0231 168 005 > 022-905-205S, 0231 170 093

Mike, I have an extra dizzy,it's an 009 but if it helps you to find the problem you're welcome to it. Just my 2 cents here before you start replacing parts did you check the fuel pump pressure?How bout something silly like changing the fuel filter?I've had partially blocked fuel filters that have given me similar problems.Let me know if you want the dizzy.

Tom, he needs the correct vacuum advance distributor. The 009 will make things worse since it doesn't have vacuum advance.

I knew it wasn't right, just thought he may be able to use it in some way to isolate the problem,I hate to see him spending money to replace parts that aren't the problem.

Nope. Bus is back with me for a short bit, moving on for another attempt at getting this 'bug' fixed in a few days. Hoping to be on the road for BBTBD

Mike,do they still think it's a fuel injection problem? I've read enough to know that fuel injection is the optimum set-up for our engines however if it becomes an ongoing issue I think I would go for dual carbs and be done with it.Just my 2 cents.

Gene just got back from his trip, and had work lined up before he could fit Peabody in. Ive left several messages, spoke to him last Monday, and he said he would call when he is ready. I dont want to be a nuisance, but at this rate, the bus likely wont be at BBTBD.

Tom, I think its gotten away from a FI issue. It originally seemed like FI. But now is more. It wont idle right when cold, takes like 10 minutes to warm up, and once warm only likes 'around town' speed. When you bring it up into the realm of 60-65 it has a high rpm miss, that occurs irregularly making it very difficult to isolate.

Yup! Back up and running! Manny was kind enough to go pick up Peabody Friday evening, so that Gene wasn't left leaving it outside his gate. After the Air Raid meeting, I drove back to Commack, and my friends Ant, Emily, and Pat took a ride in my truck with me. We made it to Manny's at like 1130, and grabbed the bus. It ran great! Took the ocean Parkway home and it felt awesome. Elt like it was running just the way it always had (which is sometimes better than somthing new, because I know all the sounds of my bus!) I pulled onto my driveway and my mom woke up to the long-missing sound of my bus idleing on the driveway. Took the bus out today, filled it up with new fuel, washed and waxed it tooi! Might try to pop off the wheels and repaint them my next weekend!

Anyone have a good paint man in the area, that can color match to a t?

Bus is going in for some body work that popped up this past season and I want to nip it in the bud before I have an issue. Its going to the same shop that did the welding on Reise, as I was very pleased with Gary's work. I just need someone to color match and shoot the pass side dogleg, rear 1/4 and pass rear corner.

I know there are a million shops out there that CAN I want the one that you've used, that will do the job right.
