Do you have the cigar lighter part that would have been used to light a smoke ? Or just the socket ! Cool piece ! You should show it off in the spring to the guy that didn't want to park near you at Etown ! HaHa .
I don't recall seeing a hole in My type II dash anywhere that that would fit into . But I am NO expert .

Re: Raj R: 73 181 Refurb
my THING was parked by all the others. Some dude rolled in an all OG paint green thing. It was nice as being OG, but whatever. So the show guy told him to park in teh spot next to me as it was open. The driver says.... 'i'm not parking there'. then he says.... ' look at that thing.... this is all orginal' pointing to my car. The show guy is like... 'yeah.... and". The drivers says... 'i'll park over here instead' The show guy looks at me and say's 'what a dick this guy' I thiught the same thing. I told the driver that rust is not contageous my freind.... it doesnt jump from one vehcile to the next. And I proceeded to think that how can someone just catergorize another person as to the way he / she treats others vehciles, just bc they show up in a rough car. Whatever.... F him. We used the free space in other ways.

Re: Raj R: 73 181 Refurb
The idea of rekeying the extra door handles is as follows. For the most part The front and rear door are interchangable ( paint job permitting, of course) The 73 thing had the mirrors mounted in the doors so they cant be swaped bc of the mirror mount hole. 74 doors and swappable. SInce the doors are structually the same, I wanted to install key - lockable rear door handles. Since I use this thing as my beater/ driver/ TUV ( Thing Utility Vehicle), I want to be able to unlock the rear doors to gain access to the cargo area without doing the ' ole reach around'. So This rekey door handles will be installed in teh rear doors giving me easier access to the bed area. It should work.

Re: Raj R: 73 181 Refurb
how are the rear doors normally opened ? only from the interior ? so they don't have rear outside handles OG .
Re: Raj R: 73 181 Refurb
They have outside door handles form the factory, of course. But the stock door handles dont have the provision to unlock with a key from the outside. So you have to unlock the front door.... lean over the front seat, and reach all the way into the rear to unlock the door from the inside. Then go back outside, and open the door.
Its not fun.

Sorry, I don't have a line on the parts. I do have some other automotive key blanks in my collection though.Raj wrote:is that what you do for a living?

I started out running with a repo man, he taught me the basics. I now service banking equipment, from vaults & SD boxes to remote lanes at the drive up, and everything (almost) in between.
Re: Raj R: 73 181 Refurb
I think the little brass pieces fit lots of cylinders . I'm sure you have a ton of handles laying around . pull the brass out and organize them into sizes . eventually you'll be able to build/rebuild cylinders .

You can put any VW key that fits in the cylinder and the grind off the tabs that still stick up and that key will now work for that cylinder. I've done it when I had door handles that didn't match the ignition and lost the keys for them.

You lose a little bit of security doing this, because now any key with a cut between the original and where it's filed down to will raise that tumbler to the correct height. If it's close, and only 1 or 2 tumblers in the lock, not that big of a deal. If you just stick any key in and go to town with the file without trying to match them up first, that allows a wider range of keys to open the lock. Always try to match up the tumblers with the key before filing them down(I'm sure you did!). The more you file off, the easier it is to pick the lock.
Then again, a brick will open the door just as fast as a key. Locks only keep honest people honest(and me in a job!).
