That engine was parked on a lawn in Rhode Island for 8 years. But the good news is that it was driven to that lawn without a problem. The previous owner said she ran strong and that it was a paperwork issue that prevented him from getting it back on the road. Good luck with plan D.

Found this as I was checking on a few things. It was on the inside of the passenger door frame. Looks like an inventory tag.

I googled "Antioch School District" and it is in sunny CA. Maybe that's why the body of the car has so little rust. Guess it just spent it's youth in California!! When it's all said and done, maybe I'll get to drive off into an endless sunset!!

I just checked out "Plan D".

It has a few issues but sometimes we just gotta move forward.

It has 125 - 125 - 80 -125 compression on a cold engine.

#3 has a timesert that came out with the spark plug.

There is a lot of endplay but i'll have to measure it and see how bad.

And the case is full of a oil/gas mix so it needs a fuel pump.

At least you seem to be making progress! What is the next step?

Do you want a fuel pump from one of my anchors?

Sure...

Get it to my house and strip it down to a long block. Fix the head, drain the oil/gas, replace the fuel pump and base, do a valve adjustment, cleanup the pulley and get it running.

Then reassemble after Audrey paint the tin, install the alternator and do a few other things.

I asked about the endplay on the Samba and it seems I should add some shims but still leave it loose. Depending on if I can't fix the head, I might want to pull one of the heads on one of your boat anchors.

My hope is that this engine will last a few thousand miles and we can find a better one. I'm hoping to keep the budget to a bare minimum and only to parts that can be reused on another engine.

The To Do List involves getting the engine to my house.

Removing the sheetmetal, generator and intake.

Then try to adjust the endplay and deal with the #3 spark plug or possibly replace the head. Then get the engine running and recheck compression.

If it's a yes, then clean and paint the sheetmetal and reassemble.

Pick a date to install.

I have to back to GA's house today or tomorrow. Should we throw it in the back of my truck to get it to you or wait until your road trips are over?

I hope this weekend to tear the engine down to a long block and early next week to see if I can fix that one bad cylinder. If not i'll need a head to replace it.

I started working on it and got the fan shroud and intake off. Some of the sheetmetal screws are rusted. Also there's holes in the heater boxes so they'll have to be replaced. The problem is the exhaust studs will probably snap and then there's problems.

I had to stop when I was told there was water leaking in my basement. It seems the waste pipe on my kitchen sink rotted through and I had to spend time finding a plumber. He here now and not able to get the rotted pipe out. This is going to be an adventure.
