Re: 69 baja
Thats a really good idea... Im going to have to do that just because it seems so simple yet so integral. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Good idea GR.

Re: 69 baja
It's perfect that the only baja in the whole place finds the biggest puddle to park in .

Thats is exactly what I was thinkin .
Re: 69 baja
Tue nite I yanked the motor... now that 90210 and melrose started up again, i had some free time. I had an intake leak at the boot, and had some painted tin i wanted to install. Also, I wanted to replace the stock tranny mounts with the steel solid one with straps. This, would allow me mount my rear cage as well.

I was surprised to see the hoover bit still on this thing. See all the insulation or foam? I sucked it all out of there, cleaning up the fins.... This should help it run cooler as well.

Buttoned her up after the meeting.... all better, some misc things to do now.

Raj,
Is it true that while you were at Dave and Busters drinking beer your lovely wife was home painting the engine?

I'm tring to button up some small car projects before I close on the new crib... bc once that happens... no more VW tinkering for some time.
I wanted to slap the cage back on since she's running decent... and I dont want to trip over it anymore
The solid trans mount restricted the swivel of the bottom mounts

.... out comes the grinder

drilled a hole through the inner and outer tube where the overlap... and threw in a bolt. Not tighened down to prevent warpage of the tubes.

Started pouring, finish it in the am

Re: 69 baja
Cool are You going to mount lights on that? or leave them where they are.
Re: 69 baja
i kinda like them ' hidden' where they are..... I think it looks kinda bad ass
I dunno, maybe I'll get another set for the cage. I so wanna mount some rear fog lights, put the plate on there, hi lift jack and a trailler hitch on the cage eventually. All in due time.

Re: 69 baja
as the temp outside drops........ i'm trying to button up all the cars for winter. I'm getting more confidence in the baja, and I decided to address the no heat issue. EZ fix since she has the heater boxes on this motor.
The issue with this car was that that when I installed the cage years ago, I welded one of the bars down to the rear torsions housings. The bar went through the hole where the old Y pipe went for the heat. So..... now the heat cant come into the cabin through the factory hole.

So i went to Dons to grab some used flex pipe

The flex pipe fit into the factory accordian style boots

I drilled a hole in the body, slightly above the factory holes.

slapped it all together..... a little weld on the inside

You have heat. And its very HOT in there now.
I'll trim it all up and paint the inside next time i have the paint out

Re: 69 baja
Lol. And we say Grecco is cut happy!
I guess its a good fix on the compromise, for the roll cage to be functional you had to secure it down to somthing structural. So long as you have heat now, its mission accomplished! Nice work GA has a ton of flex pipe like that in his camper!

a baja is not for the purist. I paid $50 for the car from a junk yard that was about to crush it. I cut her.. and she loves it!

Re: 69 baja
How hot is the heat coming out? Is it hot enough to effect the fire extinguisher in front of the outlet? Are they susceptible to heat expansion? That'd suck to have it blow on you driving down the road!
Re: 69 baja
I thought about that already. i'm not gonna chance it... i'll just move the extinguisher.
good looking out tho

Re: 69 baja
Did You cut both sides? I could deal with a car with no heat. The 68 had great heat. The bus heat works even better. good move.
Re: 69 baja
yeah... both sides.
The heat pumps in this thing now.

Re: 69 baja
do you have all the heat controls connected or is it full time high heat?
What is involved with hooking up the heat correctly?

?
full time high heat.
the only thing I would need to do it have heater boxes with lever to control the flap and attach the cables underneath.Bugggy wrote: What is involved with hooking up the heat correctly?

Rich it's a Raja. He could probably reach in there and close the flaps on a warm day (if it has the flaps)
