Got a great call last night from GA saying that he worked on my "kissed" bumper and was able to get it back in shape. I was totally taken back when I saw it to see what great results he got. The hip of the bumper followed the original contour and the flared fender was right in line. Really impressive! I'll get this one back on the car to see if it needs any more pinging. Been doing some research to get this one along with the two new front fenders primed and painted and on the bug. But first it's off to DMV, get it inspected and on the road.

Here's the results after GA's worked some magic. thanks!!
Sweet!! Def looking forward to working on this next phase, but I'm hitting the road tomorrow. so it will have to wait till next week. Food for thought to pass the miles!
Thanks, with a little bit of plastic it will look like new. But I'm sure it is good enough for insurance photos. Hey did You go to DMV yet? You are going to have so much fun driving that new wagen of yours!

I assume you used a dolly?
sand bag and hammer works well to get the basic shape right. then a hammer and dolly.
I don't think I've met Glenn A, but looks to me like he's a good guy to know. The fender looks very good! Congrats to you both. That Bug must be just about ready to roll.
If you need fenders painted, maybe I can help with that...........

GA's got my vote. I'll survey what needs to get done and post the details. Just got back from a trip to the Smokey's mountains (almost heaven, west virginaia ....you know the rest!!) so I am anxious to get pick up where I left off!
Spent the day working on the rear fender. Sanded down all the areas that GA popped back into shape plus the bumper bracket slot and the section that meets the running board. Brought it down to the bare metal. Had my first dance with bondo and that was a trip. Good thing I have lots of experience decorating cupcakes. It needs a smooth touch! After it set up, cleaned it up with 220 grit and it looks sweet. Took the rear taillight to the store and got primer and a great auto paint color match to give it a spray. This was good practice to see how the process works for the front fenders. Once it's done, get the photos to the insurance and then off to the DMV!
What started out as a tadpole, wound up like a dinosuar!!
Curious to see how the crease in the flare comes out!
These scratches needed the most help.
Cleaned up the fender edges and got rid of some rusty spots
If we catch a break with the weather then I'll paint it up tomorrow.
Cool. Lookin good. There is a product called plastic honey. I think it is made by bondo. It is a thinner for body filler. Makes it thinner and easier to spread it also reduces air bubbles.
Picked up where I left off after a stop at the store for some supplies. thanks GA it worked great!
Did another sanding and then sprayed the primer. Not used to the time change so ran out of daylight. The fender looks pretty good I went over it with 400 grit and there is one high spot that I need to play with on the flare. The section where the scratches were came out nice. A few touchups with some filler, reprime and looking forwrd to getting the paint on. Wish it was still summer!!
This is another road that I nevered traveled down before so it's an interesting journey and looking forward to getting to the destination!! (made that very poetic just for you Mike!!)
you can "spritz" on some krylon black and use it as a reference to find the high/low spots when you sand...or if you want to go all out, body shop supply shops actually carry the aerosol cans of the stuff, its very watery. Forgot what its called at the moment.
I can't find a pic of what im talking about either...imagine taking a tooth brush with paint on it it, and running your fingers across the bristles and having it spray onto the paint surface...

Thanks for passing along a great suggestion and Will I appreciate you tracking down the video. Looks like just what I need to do. Took the fender in to better lighting and can see another section that needs a little more sanding so I want to give this a try. Have the black paint on hand to give it a spritz! These trade secrets give it that extra TLC and the wealth of information that the DVG offers is great!!
Got back to working on the fender today, as well as bagging more leaves!!. I used that spritz technique to highlight the dented sections. Applied some glazing putty. Went over it again with primer and went over it down to 400 grit. Finally ready to do some painting. Just using canned auto spray paint until I get practice using a paint sprayer. These pics are with the white paint although it looks grayish but you can see the gloss finish. Bought some clear top coat but haven't decided if I'll use it. Now that the paint is on I can see the some flaws that I will correct the next time, but I"m happy how my first effort at this has worked.
