Update. Took a break, had a peach and snapple and went back to the job.
With some different tools and some imagination got the section under the shifter to advance and then I pushed the rod from the rear and it moved. Reseated it above the hard line or tube thats there and then put the rear coupler back together. I had ordered a new one but was having a prob getting the screw to go down straight through the top hole. Used the one that was in the car already and just replaced the rubber side pieces. Done. Checked after and there seem to be some burrs in the threads on the new one.
..
Out with the old
Back in place.
All reconnected. Took it for a ride and sounds and feels good

Thanks!! Hard no, but need lots of patience, especially when its 98 degrees and I'm sitting in the bug baking on the driveway! Hot mama!!
Yup! Patience is the name of the game. twisting and turning the shiftrod to get it to clean the hard lines is a major pain. I forgot about that until I read your post.
A few weeks back when I was thinking that engine was running hot, GA talked about the engine working under negative pressure. I did some checking and found out that the holes that were in the engine compartment due to it being an auto stick at some point have never been sealed off. Going to go back to the electrical section at HD and see if I can find some flat metal to seal these up.

Right side
anyone identify this part (square white piece) and its function. or can it go? Some type of relay?
Eventually hope to get all this cleaned up back here and get some new boards in place and replace the seal around the engine. These are beat.
i dont think thats the issue, but it sure $hit doesnt help. Close up the holes and see what happens. That white mystery box is some diagnosis part that the old school VW guys used to plug there machines into to tell them stuff. I have never seen one actually ever used or the output of the 'test'.

This is the DVG board. The threads flow as they flow.
Deal with it.

Just to clairify we where talking about cooling air flow. And additional holes in the engine compartment could suck in hot air that had already been discharged from the cooling fan.
Nice job staying on top of the list AoT! Keep after it.
Not to speak for AoT but the holes where things that ended up on her to-do list awhile back. Hell of a job keeping up with the list Audrey. When I need to read about someone working on VWs' I go right to the Wonder thread!

For those of you that have had a peek under the lids of the wonder you know the wriring is shaky!
Trying to clean up some of the connections.
When it rains the brake light always lites up. "Unkneaded" the connection to find that the left side had one strand to make the connection. See if the clean up helps.

Just to keep you coming back for more!!
Jacked up the wonder yesterday (after getting the hitch holes completed) to see about those auto stick holes. Cut out the rubber grommets and put together a repair using the metal end caps from HD. Cut off the flange tabs and drilled through two of them to mate them up, one on the inside and one in the wheel well and them bolted together. One Worked out ok. There was also some type of resevoir for the ATF that I took out and will close off that hole but need smaller end caps.
Driver side was about 1 1/2".
Took off resevoir and used 2" end cap to close. One more to go
Resevoir
Will take off the old undercoating and redo when I get the fenders done!
I'm pretty sure that is the charcoal canister for the fuel tank , it doesn't have anything to do with the autostick. They put them in so you wouldn't smell fumes from the gas tank.

Now you tell me! Its a goner!
Makes sense since there is a lingering odor of gas most times. It hasn't been connected in quite some time. Would the other end of that hose connect onto the fan shrould, b/c I see an unused stem that is just on the inside of the engine compartment?
