Kevin, call over to Gene at Volksworld, he has literally DOZENS of engines sitting on shelves lining his garage. I had spoken to him a few months back with prospect on one, of a few he said were good, for my 71. That obviously never materialized.

I had my wheels powdercoated 2 years ago on BUSBQ BUS and i had a wheel come loose.. the bolts were all tight then i retourqed them a month later .. two months after that i left a bus bbq and bus drove like it had a square tire in the back.. sounded like nuts and bolts.. got out could see nothing felt so wierd. so i figured i would nurse it home until i drove a mile further and saw my hubcap fly off from the lug bolts rolling around in the hubcap.. destroyed the steel wheel. put the spare on and robbed 1 bolt from ever other wheel to get me home.. when i got the new used wheel i had it powdercoated again but i had the guy mask it off.. the other three wheels i took a wire wheel and got rid of the powdercoat around the lug seats.. has been fine since.. I saw the warnings on the samba too before i had the wheels powder coated and laughed. but it happened to me.. Learn from my mistake.. :)

I'll most likely scuff the surface where the lug bolts match up. A scotch bright pad is all that's needed.

It's not about the lug gripping or not causing it to loosen. It is that the powder coat cracks under the stress. Once the coating is gone the lug is now loose.

Or maybe it only happens in the winter, in which case you'll be fine.

Either way the scotch bright will fix it.

I agree with you Glenn A... Mine Happened in the summer.. I gave my advice.. I say no more.. The powder coater laughed at me too when i told him to mask it the first time.. he said it wouldnt be a problem.. I thought it was rediculous too at one point. but i learned..

Spoke to the powder painter and he'll mask off the seating surface.

Easy as pie.

Tell me....

The first powder painted kept "fixing" the problems and they wound up with 5 layers of paint. It was a bitch to get off but John @ Action Power Painting got the job done.

I like the size, but only put 4 miles on so far. I have to give them a few hundred miles to break in and then I hope they don't spin as easily as my old ones.

My old tires are 195/60-15 all around and the fronts would rub when I hit dips in the road at highway speeds. The new tores are 195/55-15 and are a bit shorter. The rears are 205/60-15 and are a little wider and taller.
