It might be hard to drive it without a transmission!!!AoT wrote:So you going to put that temp stock engine in for the duration of the repairs?

Re: End of the season
I have a spare IRS 4 speed. Both the spare engine and tranny will drop right in since they came from a late 73. Correct TO bearing and correct external regulator alternator.Brown wrote:It might be hard to drive it without a transmission!!!AoT wrote:So you going to put that temp stock engine in for the duration of the repairs?
The engine crate is done.

There's enough room so I can ship the header, carbs, intake manifolds and other stuff so they can run it and found the cause of the tapping sound.

Re: End of the season
I called UPS and almost had a stroke. I called Conway and the price is much cheaper but still not reasonable.
It seems if you don't have an account it's much more expensive.

Re: End of the season
why don't you have the people you shipping these two crates to use their account and you pay them. I'm sure they have accounts set up with various shipping comepanies since they ship transmission and motors out of their facilities all the time.

Re: End of the season
UPS said over $1000 with residential pickup and a lift gate at both ends. Conway was about $300 with me delivering it to their depot in Syosset. I'm sure I can get it cheaper.

$300 for both? That's not that unreasonable. I deal with UPS every day. Every other day I get a "fuel surcharge" update from them. It's a joke

$300 just for the tranny, $400 for the engine.

Re: End of the season
I sent my tranny to Rancho last year via UPS and it cost around $130. I did the same thing with the custom wood box and the straps to tie it down. The tricky part was I had to make the box to the dimensions of the biggest cardboard box they had to get that price. Tight fit but I got it. Oh yeh, Rancho must have liked my wooden box because they sent the tranny back in a double walled cardboard box and I wrote them a letter to please send it back in the same box. Oh well.

freightcenter.com
They gave me the best price and I can save on the lift gate by delivering it to the shipper's depot in Plainview.

Re: End of the season
FedEx had something called "dimensional weight" Where you could have a large item even if it is light your going to pay more. That kind of sucks. Nice work shopping around.

Re: End of the season
Arrangements have been made and i'll be delivering both crates to freight terminals on Friday with the help of Jim Lynch and his small trailer.
I was able to get the cost down to a reasonable amount for both... with a bit of shopping.
There's more to come over the winter.
