68 Bug

So i decided to clean up the bug and have been working on the front of it. Here are some pics of it with the front fenders off and the damage found. It's not really that bad at all.

Still a little cold for epoxy Ken. I would wait till is above 50. But I know how it is trying to get stuff done.

Nothing sepcial, some of it was loose and scraped right off and then i use thw wire wheel on my angle grinder

Took some time today to prep the car for replacement of the heater channels. Removed the the seats, remaining carpet (not much), heater tubes under the ream seat and cleaned up the sealing material from the interior around the heater channel welds.

driver side heater tube. Note spot welds which i had to drill out to remove it from the car. No Bakelite connects in this bug.

Thanks! I have watched the Bug me video a few times and what it is missing in production quality it makes up for in pictures of exactly what and where to drill and cut. I'm actually excited about doing this as I thought it was going to be a much more difficult job then it seems to be so far.

One PITA is going to be having to disconnect the wire harness in the front to feed it back through the hole in the new heater channel, but I can do that at my leisure or never!!

I guess you might be able to leave a cable in the new channel to use as a drag at a later date.

The Hole I'm talking about is is very short so feeding the cable through isn't much of a problem. The problem is having to disconnect the cable from the trunk side. See the two pictures above. In the second one i cut the metal to pull the cable out. The top picture is not cut!

good pics Ken. Keep them coming. My baja is a 69, and I bought it as a unfinished project. Whom ever did it left the wire outside the channel. Not too big a deal, just never bothered me to do anything about it when I redid the wiring. The main loom either in these cars or the earlier ones ( where it runs through the roof line) arent fun to replace.

So you going to be 'bug less' for a while or do you still have the rotten banana to drive in the interim?

Just checked my heater channels are in transit to Uniondale. Hoping for a delivery tomorrow so i can work on the install this weekend!!!

Got a little sidetracked today. I've been working on giving the kitchen a little facelift and today was the installation of a new stainless steel sink. Started out well, removing the old cast iron sink (that will be making a trip to the scrap yard). Then the funs started. The opening was too small so i had to grind a little, cut a little then gring somemore befroe i fannly got it to fit. The i had to remove the section of the door becasue i could not get the sink hold down clip installed otherwise. After installing the drain and fixture and setting the sink in place I made my first trip to home depot to get a new drain pipe, seal and some fittings. After getting home and installing the new drain pipe i had to cut back the pvc to move the trap but my PVC glue was all dried out, so one more trip to the depot for glue. FInished up about 7:00 PM

No VW time but at least I'm a ittle close to finishing the kitchen!
