on a type one motor you cannot get rear panel off without pulling panel. but on a type 4 i think you can get it out.

Sweated out a few days "wondering" if the wagon was a goner!!

Made some progress on the front seat recovers.

Frame all stripped and ready for some styling.


this is the homemade version of recovering the seats. Movers quilt to cover the springs and foam and batting to give it a lift.



Bottom was an easy fit


Finished and pleased with the "redsults"!!



DS is a bit more involved due to the seat track and adjustment bar. Working on it.

I like that movers blanket bw the springs and padding. That should help resist the springs form cutting into the foam. Nice trick!

engines back in thanks to Glenn giving up a saturday morning. Battery needs a good charge but I have a few spares courtesy of Paul G. Have to get the rear apron on and finish off the fuel line connection. We ran the bus off a can of gas. With some of the unneeded wires removed the engine compartment looks much neater.

It will be time for an oil change but still need to get the brakes lines bled and shoes adjusted but this step has gotten my mojo going!!

All of the interior panels are missing. I got front panels from the bus I picked but I took them to use as a template. I 'll have to seen what my color options are. The rear seats will be recovered in pops of red as well as the window covers that I will sew for a custom fit!!

Had a busy day with the bus on Saturday. got the fuel line all reconnected so put some gas in and gave it a crank. Started right up and it runs strong and steady until the choke warms up and then it sputters so it needs an adjustment.

Started the electric checklist and there are issues. I have headlights and one tail light. Cleaned the connection of the light that's out and the wiring is brittle and need rewiring. The directional going right has both indicators flashing on the inside but needs to be held in place to keep it going so don't know what it is doing on the outside. The left directional gets no response. There were some fuses missing and some had the wrong amperage so I replaced with the correct ones and filled all the slots.

Got most of the extra interior seating stored in a shed so making the jump to get the rear seats recovered. Went and got new tires since the other ones looked real bad. The tire store told me that the model that was on the rims had not been made since late 80's/early 90's so they were 20+ years. He told me once the tires heated up from rolling on the road they would have blew so made the investment to be safe. I hope the next vw I might get does not have butchered electric. It is not my strong subject!! HELP....

Going to get some paint after work to paint the rims and give them a fresh look. Have some pics but left the camera home.

This is the gaggle at the fuse box. Spent some time last night sorting out what works and doesn;t work. Headlights and wipers are working. With the new fuses I put in there is power at the fuse box to #1 and #2 on both sides so I think new wiring and connectors are in order. I did fill all the slots with the correct amperage.


Also the sender needs to connected. Left it stranded on the install.


The horn is not working and found the connections at the horn disconnected. There is no push on the horn button but I think it was taken off and not reseated correctly so will work on that.

i posted this up a few years ago. I first saw it a flatbed Don's house. You basically hook it up to pos and neg and how you have both at your finger tips. Push a button and you force pos to the tip to power up anything within reach. Toggle the switch the other way, now you have ground at the tip. Mine also has a built in light, and audible response. Its kinda like playing 'operation' when uder the dash.... hehe.

Finished up on getting the wheels repainted, just used a brush and oil based paint.

Big improvement. Don't want to overdue making this bus look pretty!


Having a blast with the electric. Dropped the fuse box down and there were lots of surprises. I have been working on the horn and last night found as I was tracing the wire back to the fuse box that the wire was severed as it went over a beam and that there is ablolutely no wire to be found on fuse 10! Guess that explains alot.


I decided to remove any wire that dead ended to clean up the mess. This is what I love about electric. Now that I removed some extra wires, I have both headlights and DS tail light AND PS front and rear directional (fronts never worked before). Also have DS front and rear directionals but only if the headlights are on!!

The PS tail light in is series with the license plate light so I traced that back to see what was up and it was easy to see the problem. One of the wires has rusted out and making no connection.

Even I a virgin electrician can figure this out!

Will run new wires to this connections and hopefully get the right results!
