Cycle for Survival, I need your help

Post by Glenn »

Some of you may remember I participated in Cycle for Survival last year. It's a fund raiser for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC for rare cancers.

It's a day of 4 Spin cycle sessions, if you've never seen a spin class, it's pretty intense.

The date is March 1st, 2014 and my goal is to raise $500. I'm hoping by starting early i'll reach that goal and increase it.

The initial reason I got involved is to support my friend Sue who was diagnosed with a glioblastoma (Brain Cancer) back in January 2011. After 2 surgeries she's doing well and has past the 15 month average survival rate. Unfortunately she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer last month and now has to battle that along with the Brain Cancer.

But since then i've learned there are many rare cancers and all require different treatment. This means huge amounts of research is needed is needed and your donation will help. No donation is too small so don't feel like it won't help... it will.

If you would like to donate, here's a link to my team page: http://mskcc.convio.net/goto/glennring

Thank you for your support.

Thanks Danny and to those that have donated.

Originally my goal was $500 but after this post and a email to family, I quickly raised it to $1500. And i'm sure when it gets closer and I really make a push, it will be raised again.

I just registered a domain name that is easy to remember and forwards to the MSKCC website. I might add some content later and then have a link to the MSKCC site.

If you want to make a donation just scroll down and click on my name. It will take you to my personal page.

With less than 2 months to go, it's time to renew this topic.

The event is Saturday March 1st and the team has grown to 5 members.

Collectively the team has raised almost $6000 toward our goal of $10,000. I'm at $1275 and still short of my goal of $2000.

If you have already donated, I thank you. If not just remember that no amount is too small. Those $5 and $10 donations are just as appreciated as larger ones.

I setup a easy to remember website http://www.iride4sue.org which will link to the teams webpage on Memorial Sloan-Kettering's site. Just click on my name and follow the directions. Or you can click on this link: https://secure2.convio.net/mskcc/site/D ... tion=form1

Since I haven't rode in a few months I need to get in shape so I don't look bad. I'll post pictures and maybe a video of the event.

Time to raise the bar again. I am totally amazed at the generosity of family, friends and total strangers.

With the $200 in checks I just mailed in we just passed $15,000. And there's still 3 weeks left, so if anyone wants to donate.. please do.

Boobie prize.

Getting ready.

After hurting my back last October I haven't ridden in 3 months. So I brought the bike down to the basement and have been riding every day. Only a 1/2 hour at a time, it's amazing how fast you can get out of shape. But i'm sure at the event the adrenalin will be flowing and i'll be pumped.

I'll post a review of the event and totals after.

I just found out that Sue has been asked to ride the "Founder's" bike during the 11:00am session. She'll be introduced by her sister Maria and i'm sure there won't be a dry eye in the room. It's a ceremonial bike and i'm sure she'll only do a few minutes. But it's another step to her recovery.

What an amazing event. The energy and positive vibe fills the room.

The survivor stories really make you think how strong people are. But the kids stories bring a lot of strong emotions to the surface and just makes you want to try to raise more donations next year.

Sue was invited to ride the "Founder's" Bike. We knew she'd have to take it easy and guessed she'd ride it for 5-10 minutes.... WRONG, she rode it for the entire 45 minute session.

Here's some numbers, I raised, with thanks to you, $3715. Team Gray Matter raised $19,770. Cycle for Survival has grown to 13 cities and this year has raised $19,154,303 and $50,600,000 since it started in 2007. 100% of the funds raised go directly to research for rare cancers and have funded 85 clinical trials and research studies.

YOU made a difference and I hope I can count on you next year and the year after that until there's no longer a reason for this event.
