I dig it 'cause it's close to my home, you can camp on the outer beach crossing (permit required) not just at the std campground, but truly your a hundred yrds from the beach and that's where I spend most of the day /evening. And for $15 a night you get two days at a beautiful beach and unlike Jones or Robert Moses or any of the others out by LIDO,Nassau, Malibu...you don't have to compete for sand or parking.

So Ben Grimm's engine that I bought and ran hard for 2800 miles last season, even though she was a leaker, ran really well. Now she is not just leaking it but blowing it out the tailpipe (must be pushing past the ring's in one of the cylinders)
any body know of someone local that can rebuild the engine at a reasonable cost? Times are tight but I'm hoping not to lose the season....

You might be able to get away with new p/c and having the heads rebuilt.

Nothing Type 4 is cheap... sorry.

Dave, maybe it would cost less to buy a long block?

Glad to see you're still going to make it out this season!

I have a short block that I will let go for the keeping the core $500 I paid. It didn't burn oil but I had a head ring that I burned a hole through. Throw your heads on and you should be good to go.

Not cheap, but GT just did a top end rebuild on a T4. New heads, p/c and oil cooler.

p/c = pistons and cylinders

Didn't ask,Type 4 parts are not cheap and paying a shop to do the entire job is not cheap.

Should AVP type 4 engines absolutely be avoided or have the builds improved over the years...or gotten worse?

I've never even heard of AVP till now.
If (when?) I need to put an engine in my bus, it will come either from Chico at CPR or from Adiren at Headflow Masters. He builds many IV engines and I've not heard of one going south.
This looks like a good fit, if Dave hops on Tom's engine it might be less money all in than having to sort through the engine that's in the bus currently.

Personally if I were Dave I'd just use it and add oil until it was undrivable, may even last the season and then he has all winter to deal with it.

FYI, I have bought both of my longblocks from Chico (bug and bus) and recommend him.

SO...Ben has been sleeping for a while, had some starter issues...long story wound up giving back the starter to the re-builder and he replaced the solenoid again. I put the starter in and no go. pulled it back out replaced the bushing in the tranny put the starter back in and this time I was able to jump the starter but the key wont work (perhaps now I have a bad ignition switch yet to be tested)
Also the engine I bought is tired, blows smoke sometimes out of cyl #4 (spark plug gets oil fouled) and I need a replacement, so I have been kicking around the idea of getting a rebuilt long block flipping parts from one to the other and giving BEN a good strong heart. unfortunately moneys tight (what else is new) and I cant go with CHICO @ $3600+CORE+SHIPPING for the long block and I think I will take my chances w/ BUS DEPOT's @ $1800+CORE and take a road trip to PA and pick it up.
I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but I'm getting close...engine swap might be tough for me these days, so I'm thinking about even giving it to a local VW mech to do it...and of course i'd like to have it done asap to enjoy this year when the weather gets warmer.
we have had so much fun in it up to date and I want to really drive it confidently this year....

Agreed Dave. Nothing like getting in them, turning the key, and just gooooo! But as you know, its not always that easy. Im not fluent in T4, but know they arent 'cheap' when you are used to T1 prices. Sounds like you have a plan though. If all goes as planned on my side too, Im hoping to camp right there next you at least one time this year.

So I rcvd a call yesterday from the company out in Ca. that's building the long block for me.
Seems as though a guy bailed out on an engine that was being made and I am the next in line.
Long block shipped yesterday and I'll have it on Friday.
I called Tony to see what the damage would be if I were to have him do the flip, any other options are welcomed...
Anyone?
