NY Title/Registration question

Post by murphree11 »

How does it work if you want to purchase a pre-'72 vehicle that hasn't been registered or inspected in years. Do you only need a bill of sale? Can you get paperwork from the DMV to transfer ownership. In my particular case the vehicle is a '69, in NY and was last registered in NY.
Thank for any info. I did ask Google and read the pages on the DMV site which is why my feeble brain is confused.

Does the prior owner have the old reggie? On pre 72 vehicles, there is no title... just a tansferable registration. If he/ shee has that... have him/ her sign it over and that acts as a title. Also needed are a bill of sale and better if you have a NYS bill of sale to proof the purchase price. Thats used for sales tax purposes.

Good luck!

as a former police officer and seller of cars as a side job i ve dealt w the dictarorship called nys dmv... Dont buy the non title car without at least seeing and getting a reg a registration. Check the vins closely and make sure the reg is for the last registered owner ie the guy u r dealin g with.. W without it the reg your n ever gonna get the thing registered. if seller has no reg have him go down to dmv ad request the last copy of registration. He may have to re register it even temporarily to sell it to u. as far as bill of sale dmv will only take their bill of sale form as the seller must sign and affirm price and give social security number : :o  . good luck//////
