put the car on stands and a jack under the spring plate. After unbolting it lower it down safely while prying it past the stop. Make sure it is a touch off the stop when you start prying it, This way you know for sure the jack is supporting it. Before pulling the plate all the way off measure it with and angle finder. Do both sides the same exact way. I will assume you know the inner splines and outer splines are different.

Yes i know. I am using the talbe Glenn RIng produced to lower it about 2 inches. + 10 on the inner and - 10 on the outer splines

The bug has been idlling very pooring or more accurately not idling at all.

I pulled a PICT 34 German Carb out of my stock which looked like it had a tight throttle shaft and rebuilt it. I installed it today and set the timing statically and it after the bowl filled with gas it started right up and already idles way better than it did before. My Dwell/tach analyzer decided it had had enough so i could not time it or adjust the carb but i will pick one up tomorrow at Advanced Auto and work on it again tomorrow.

I also got a new in dash cd/stereo for Christmas that i would like to get installed along with my front speaker kick panels.

It was good to get back to the car after spending so much time getting the garage straightened out.

Back out to the car today adjusting the valves, checking the points, timing and adjusting the carb.

Only three valves needed to be adjusted.

The dwell was set to 61 so i adjusted the points and now its 47.

The timing is proving to be a pain. I have a dual vacuum advance distributor so the timing is 7.5 ATDC but i can't get it close to that without the car wanting to stall. To get it to keep running the timing is probable set around 10 BTDC. with it idling around 900 rpm.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you using a timing light that's adjustable or the scale on the engine ? Vacuum hoses should be off when adjusting.

Regular timing light and I don't think it made a difference if the vacuum line was on or off, i got the same result.

If you are timing it at idle it won't make a difference. Maybe the scale if f'd up ? I have a light that adjusts, I could stop by next Saturday when I'm in Oceanside and we could see if it makes a difference.

Just came across this on TheSamba regarding timing marks and the number of different pullys which are out there. I did not realize there were some many and that the meaning of the marks varied so much.

Might explain some of my difficulties in timing the car.

Have a read if you have some time.

ahhh... very true. I guess we all ASSumed you had the correct pully on the motor. You have a degreed pulley you can slap on to at least time or take that ' notch ' out of the equation? How about find TDC on the pulley you have to confirm its correct? I have a degreed pulley you can borrow if need be

Took my distributor to the expert today to verify it was working properly. He was able to set the points for the proper dwell and then checked and verified that the mechanical and vacuum advance both worked. He was able to determine the capacitor was bad so when i got home I replaced the cap re installed it in the car and bingo i was able to time it right on mark. Then i ran it up to full advance and that was right on 30 degrees BTDC.

I was able to adjust the bypass and volume control screws to get it to idle nice around 900 RPM.

I still have hesitation when accelerate so tomorrow i'm going to check the accelerator pump on the carb to see that it's working right.
